REMOVAL OF FRONT WHEEL ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM WHEEL SPEED SENSOR-SERVICE TIP

LINCOLN:
2000 LS

ISSUE
The front wheel Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) wheel speed sensor is part of the front wheel bearing dust cover assembly. In order to ensure that the integrity of the wheel bearing dust cover sealing is maintained if the ABS wheel speed sensor is removed for service, the correct service procedures must be followed. This information is not currently contained in the 2000 Lincoln LS Workshop Manual CD-ROM.

ACTION
When servicing an ABS wheel speed sensor, refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

FRONT WHEEL ABS SENSOR REMOVAL

1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Section 100-02 of the 2000 Lincoln LS Workshop Manual CD-ROM.

2. Push up on the ABS sensor retaining clip (closed end of the clip) and pull the sensor from the wheel bearing dust cap (Figure 1).

3. Remove the ABS sensor retaining clip from the dust cap.

4. Inspect the end of the ABS sensor for the presence of water.

NOTE
IF WATER IS FOUND, THE WHEEL BEARING MAY BE CONTAMINATED AND THE BEARING ASSEMBLY MUST BE REPLACED. REFER TO SECTION 204-01 OF THE 2000 LINCOLN LS WORKSHOP MANUAL CD-ROM FOR DETAILED WHEEL BEARING/HUB ASSEMBLY SERVICE PROCEDURES.

5. Remove the sensor wire from the clip attachments to the brake hose.

6. Unplug the ABS sensor wire from the mating connector.

FRONT WHEEL ABS SENSOR INSTALLATION

1. Remove the 0-ring that is present inside the dust cap ABS sensor hole (Figure 2).

2. Clean the inside surface of the ABS sensor hole in the dust cap with a clean, dry, oil free cloth (Figure 3).

3. Install new 0-ring supplied with the ABS sensor service kit into the dust cap (Figure 4).

4. Install the new ABS sensor retainer clip supplied in the kit into the dust cap.

5. Apply a 2.5mm (0.10") bead of the RTV sealant supplied in the service kit to the new sensor in the area shown in Figure 5.

6. Push up on the closed end of the retainer clip and insert the ABS sensor into the dust cap and release the clip. The sensor is fully seated when the open ends of the retainer clip are flush with the outer surface of the dust cap. If the ends of the clip are not flush, press the sensor inward toward the bearing to fully seat the sensor and the clip (Figures 6 through 9).

7. Reattach the ABS sensor wire to the brake hose and connect the sensor plug to the mating connector.
