A/T - Filter Improperly Installed (Stall/Engagement)

Lincoln: 2000 LS

ISSUE
On some vehicles the transmission fluid filter may be installed improperly during manufacturing and/or after servicing. This may result in the vehicle exhibiting engine stalling at idle and/or no transmission engagement.

ACTION
Follow normal diagnosis as found in the Workshop Manual to insure that no other symptoms or conditions exist. If no other conditions exists refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

Service Procedure

Using the LS Workshop Manual procedure, Section 307-01 for Fluid Pan, Gasket and Filter, found under In-Vehicle Service, drain the transmission fluid.

NOTE:
Do not drain the fluid from the torque converter.

1. Remove the fluid pan and gasket.





2. Inspect the fluid filter for proper seating, (refer to Figure 1). If the filter is not seated fully, remove the filter and inspect the seals for damage.

3. If the filter is properly seated, then go to Step 8.

4. If the seals are not damaged lubricate the main control bore and seals, then re-install the filter, making sure that the filter is seated flush on the main control (refer to figure 1).

5. If the seals or filter are damaged, replace the filter assembly (XW4Z-7A098-BB).

6. If you have difficulty seating the filter, remove the seals from the filter and install them into the main control bore, then install the filter.

7. Torque the filter attaching bolts to 10 N*m (89 lb-in).

8. Install the fluid gasket and pan, torque the pan bolts to 11 N*m (8 lb- ft).

9. Following the Fluid Level Check procedure, as indicated in the LS Workshop Manual, Section 307-01, add fluid as required.

10. Verify that the transmission is operating properly. If the condition still exists, follow the Diagnostics Procedures as listed in the LS Workshop Manual Section 307-01, under Diagnosis By Symptom for these concerns.
