This article only applies to vehicles equipped with Advance Trac vehicle stability control system. Vehicles equipped with Advance Trac can be identified by the letters ATS on the traction assist cancel switch located on the center console.
ISSUE
An intermittent "popping" noise coming from the brake pedal area under normal driving conditions, with possibly movement of the brake pedal, may occur on some vehicles. This may be due to a strategy concern within the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) of the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) and Advance Trac System.
ACTION
Replace the Anti-lock Brake/Advance Trac ECU with the revised ECU. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
VERIFICATION
The concern can be verified by the following method:
1. Turn vehicle Off.
2. Start vehicle and let it idle for 8 to 15 minutes.
3. Drive vehicle at speeds greater than 50 km/h (30 mph), foot off the brake, in a smooth and steady manner. During this drive, the popping noise should begin to occur.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
WARNING
BEFORE THE ECU IS REMOVED FROM THE VEHICLE, IT IS NECESSARY TO UPLOAD THE MODULE CONFIGURATION INFORMATION TO THE MODULE CONFIGURATION INFORMATION TO THE NEW GENERATION STAR (NGS) TESTER. FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION, REFER TO THE 2000 LS WORKSHOP MANUAL, SECTION 418-01.
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable from the battery.
2. Disconnect the anti-lock brake ECU electrical connector by lifting up on the release tab.
3. Remove the two (2) screws that secure the electrical Auxiliary Junction Box (AJB) and position the AJB aside.
4. Remove the four (4) screws that secure the ECU to the Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) and remove the ECU.
NOTE
THESE SCREWS ARE TORX HEAD FASTENERS. THE SIZE IS AN "E5" INVERTED TORX. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE A CONVENTIONAL SOCKET TO REMOVE THESE FASTENERS. CONVENTIONAL SOCKETS WILL STRIP THE SCREW HEADS.
5. Install the revised ECU. Tighten the four (4) screws that secure the ECU to the HCU to 2 Nm (18 lb-in).
6. Reinstall the AJB.
7. Connect the ECU electrical connector.
8. Reinstall the battery ground cable.
9. Download the module configuration data from the NGS Tester into the ECU. Refer to the Workshop Manual, Section 418-01, for additional information.
NOTE
WHEN THE BATTERY HAS BEEN DISCONNECTED AND RECONNECTED, SOME ABNORMAL DRIVE SYMPTOMS MAY OCCUR WHILE THE VEHICLE RELEARNS ITS ADAPTIVE STRATEGY. THE VEHICLE MAY NEED TO BE DRIVEN 16 KM (10 MILES) OR MORE TO RELEARN THE STRATEGY.
