ISSUE
Some vehicles produced before 6/15/01 may exhibit an intermittent crank - no start condition with the following symptoms:
^ Typically occurs after a short Hot Soak "Theft" warning lamp flashing rapidly
^ No communication with the PCM during the condition
^ Instrument Cluster Module (1CM) may have DTC U1147 and/or U1262 stored
^ No ignition spark or injector pulse during the condition
^ The vehicle will start normally once the ignition key is cycled completely to the "OFF" position and restarted
This may be caused by incorrect PCM initialization during start up caused by a sneak path of voltage to the PCM.
ACTION
Install Jumper Wiring Harness 1W4Z-13A612-AA on the vehicle. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
NOTE
EVERY ATTEMPT SHOULD BE MADE TO VERIFY THE CONDITION. HOWEVER, THE CONDITION MAY BE VERY INTERMITTENT AND OCCUR ONLY AFTER A SHORT HOT SOAK EVENT. CUSTOMERS MAY COMPLAIN OF AN INTERMITTENT CRANK - NO START CONDITION WITH THE "THEFT" LAMP FLASHING RAPIDLY.
1. Attempt to verify the condition and the symptoms associated as listed above.
2. Remove the lower instrument hush panel by grasping the panel at the rear and pulling down. Once panel is released from the christmas tree fasteners, remove the courtesy lamp socket and pull the panel rearward to remove from vehicle.
3. Disconnect the wiring harness from the Brake Pressure Switch harness and connect the 2-wire connector of the new wiring harness into the Brake Pressure switch. The Brake Pressure Switch will be Blue and Black in color. Refer to Figures 1 and 2 during all remaining steps.
4. Connect the original Brake Pressure Switch vehicle harness into the 1-pin connector of the new wiring harness.
NOTE
SOME VEHICLES MAY BE EQUIPPED WITH THE ADVANCE TRAC SYSTEM (ATS). VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ATS MAY BE IDENTIFIED BY A TRACTION CONTROL SWITCH WITH THE BACK OF A VEHICLE LOSING TRACTION GRAPHIC. NON ATS VEHICLES WILL HAVE A SWITCH WITH A TIRE SPINNING GRAPHIC.
5. If the vehicle IS equipped with ATS (Advance Trac System) continue with the following sub steps. If the vehicle is not equipped with ATS, proceed to Step 6.
a. Disconnect the Steering Rate Sensor 4-pin connector.
b. Connect the 4-pin female end of the new wiring harness to the Steering Rate Sensor.
c. Connect the original Steering Rate Sensor vehicle harness to the male 4-pin connector of the new wiring harness.
6. If the vehicle IS NOT equipped with ATS, continue with the following sub steps. Even though the vehicle is not equipped with ATS, it will still have the Steering Rate Sensor vehicle harness connector. It will be connected to a empty/dummy connector attached to the steering column.
a. Locate and disconnect the 4-pin connector for the would be Steering Rate Sensor.
b. Connect the Steering Rate Sensor vehicle harness to the male 4-pin connector of the new wiring harness.
c. Connect the 4-pin female end of the new wiring harness to the empty "dummy" connector at the base of the steering column.
7. Secure the wiring harness retainer to the exposed steering column attachment stud. This will ensure the wiring harness will not come in contact with the pedal assembly during vehicle operation. Refer to Figure 1.
8. Install the lower instrument hush panel and courtesy lamp.
9. Verify vehicle repair.
