SPECIAL TOOL(S)
WARNING:
- Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) vehicle and when handling an air bag module. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
- After deployment, the air bag surface can contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, a product of the gas generant combustion that is irritating to the skin. Wash your hands with soap and water afterwards.
- The safety belt pretensioner is a pyrotechnic device. Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag equipped vehicle and when handling a safety belt buckle pretensioner or safety belt retractor pretensioner. Never probe a pretensioner electrical connector. Doing so could result in pretensioner or air bag deployment and could result in personal injury.
CAUTION: Do not handle or lift the seat by the inboard side shield or a torque tube (seat track motor cable and housing). Care must be taken when handling or lifting the seat to prevent damage.
NOTE:
- If a side air bag deployment took place, the seatback pad, trim cover and side air bag module must be replaced. The seatback frame should be replaced if necessary.
- Driver seat is shown, passenger seat is similar.
REMOVAL
1. WARNING: To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or replacing any front or side air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) components and before servicing, replacing, adjusting or striking components near the front or side air bag sensors, such as doors, instrument panel, console, door latches, strikers, seats and hood latches.
The first row side impact sensors are located at or near the base of the B-pillars.
The second row side impact sensors (if equipped) are located at or near the base of the C-pillars.
To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies (if equipped).
Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.
2. WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions, notes, and instructions in the supplemental restraint system (SRS) deactivation/reactivation procedure.
Deactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS).
3. Remove the components in the order listed in the illustration and table.
Item 4: Front Seat Track-to-Floor Front Fasteners Removal Note
1. NOTE: Original fasteners must be discarded and new service fasteners installed. Service fasteners can be reused.
Remove the front seat fasteners and discard.
Item 5: Front Seat Track-to-Floor Rear Fasteners Removal Note
1. Connect the battery ground cable.
2. Move the seat to the most forward position.
3. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.
4. Remove the two seat track-to-floor covers.
5. NOTE: Original fasteners must be discarded and new service fasteners installed. Service fasteners can be reused.
Remove the track-to-floor fasteners and discard.
INSTALLATION
1. NOTE: Make sure the battery negative cable is still disconnected before continuing with the installation portion of this procedure.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
2. For vehicles without side air curtains, remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the vehicle harness side of the driver seat side air bag electrical connector.
3. NOTE: If the headliner has the Word "AIRBAG" embossed on it near each B-pillar the vehicle is equipped with side air curtain modules.
For vehicles with side air curtains, remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the vehicle harness side of the driver seat side thorax air bag electrical connector.
4. Connect the front seat restraint system electrical connector.
5. Connect the battery ground cable.
6. With the restraint system diagnostic tools installed at all deployable devices, prove out the supplemental restraint system (SRS).
7. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.
8. WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions, notes, and instructions in the supplemental restraint system (SRS) deactivation/reactivation procedure.
Reactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS).
9. Connect the battery ground cable.
10. WARNING: The restraint system diagnostic tool is for restraint system service only. Remove from the vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.
With all the restraint system diagnostic tools removed, prove out the supplemental restraint system (SRS).
11. Check the active restraint system for correct operation.
