TRANSMISSION 5R55S - ILLUMINATED
TRANSMISSION CONTROL INDICATOR LIGHT (TCIL)
AND DTC P1744 ONLY

FORD: 2003 Thunderbird

LINCOLN: 2003 LS

ISSUE

Some 2003 Lincoln LS or Thunderbird vehicles may exhibit an illuminated transmission control indicator light (TCIL), with DTC P1744 (torque convertor clutch (TCC) slippage detected).

ACTION

To service, perform the Service Procedure listed below. Do not replace any components until diagnostics are completed.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Perform on board diagnostics.

a. If other DTC's are present in addition to P1744, follow normal diagnostics and repair other DTC's first before continuing with this TSB. If the condition is corrected then return vehicle to customer. If P1744 is still present proceed to Step 2.

b. If P1744 is the only DTC present proceed to Step 2.

2. Perform Output State Control Test for TCC in DRIVE MODE (Workshop Manual Section 307-01), to test whether the torque converter clutch is engaging and disengaging.

To Perform The DRIVE MODE Test:

^ VSS and digital TR sensors must be operational.

^ No VSS and TR sensor DTCs present.

^ Engine ON.

^ Transmission range selector lever in Overdrive.

^ Vehicle speed must be greater than 3 km/h (2 MPH).

^ Transmission in 2nd gear or higher.

^ TFT between 60-275° (33-153°C).

^ Brake not applied below 32 km/h (20 MPH).

^ Maintain steady speed.

a. Monitor TSS, engine RPM and TCC.

b. Command TCC "ON" and "OFF".

(1) If RPM does not change, replace the Main Control Valve Body assembly (3W4Z-7A100-CB). Refer to In-Vehicle Repair procedures listed in the Workshop Manual Section 307-01, proceed to Step 3.

(2) If RPM does change continue with normal Workshop Manual diagnostics.

3. Flush and clean the transmission cooling system after main control valve body replacement.
