ISSUE
Some Lincoln LS vehicles produced before 7/21/2003, may exhibit the Headliner dropping down or becoming unattached at the rear of the vehicle near the Center High Mount Stop Lamp (CHMSL). This may be due to the Dual Lock (Hook and Loop) Fastener that attaches the Headliner being not completely adhered.
ACTION
Repair by re-adhering the Dual Lock Fastener and securing the Headliner. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
NOTE
NO SERVICE IS REQUIRED IF THE HEADLINER IS ATTACHED PROPERLY.
1. Verify that the Headliner has become unattached at the rear of the vehicle under the CHMSL.
2. Pull down on the rear of the Headliner to inspect if the Dual Lock Fastener is still adhered to the CHMSL.
NOTE
THE DUAL LOCK FASTENER MUST BE COMPLETELY ADHERED TO THE CHMSL.
3. If the Dual Lock Fastener is still completely adhered to the CHMSL, go to Step 12. If not completely adhered to CHMSL, remove partially/not adhered Dual Lock Fastener from Headliner and/or CHMSL.
NOTE
THE REMOVED DUAL LOCK FASTENER WILL BE REUSED.
4. Remove any adhesive material still remaining on the CHMSL with a scraper or putty knife and wipe clean with a shop towel.
NOTE
DO NOT USE ANY SOLVENTS TO CLEAN THE CHMSL. WIPE CLEAN WITH A SHOP TOWEL ONLY.
5. Install 3M DP-810 NS Adhesive Cartridge (# 49082) into Applicator Gun (Rotunda # 501-040 or 3M EPX Metal Applicator 50 ML (# 21789)) and install a new 3M Mixing Nozzle (# 85801) into adhesive cartridge.
NOTE
1 (ONE) 3M DP-810 NS ADHESIVE CARTRIDGE (# 49082) WILL REPAIR MULTIPLE VEHICLES BUT A NEW 3M MIXING NOZZLE (# 85801) WILL BE NEEDED FOR EACH REPAIR.
NOTE
DO NOT CUT MIXING NOZZLE TIP.
NOTE
3M DP-810 NS ADHESIVE CARTRIDGES (# 49082), 3M MIXING NOZZLES (# 85801), AND 3M EPX METAL APPLICATOR GUNS 50 ML ( # 21789) CAN BE OBTAINED BY CONTACTING: 1 (877) 774 8443 OR (734) 451-2211 (REFERENCE THIS TSB NUMBER WHEN CALLING)
6. Ensure proper adhesive mixture by squeezing out approximately a 1" (2.54 cm) long bead of material before continuing with the service procedure.
7. Apply a small bead (approximately 1/8" wide) of 3M DP-810 NS adhesive to the CHMSL (failed adhesive) side of the Dual Lock Fastener that was removed in Step 4. Refer to (Figure 1) for proper adhesive bead pattern.
CAUTION
DO NOT APPLY TOO MUCH ADHESIVE OR IMPROPER REPAIR MAY RESULT.
8. Align Dual Lock Fastener with "L" shaped locator on CHMSL and install. Applying pressure, hold Dual Lock Fastener to CHMSL for 1 (one) minute. Refer to (Figure 2).
9. Immediately wipe off any excess adhesive material expelled around edges of Dual Lock Fastener.
CAUTION
DO NOT GET ANY ADHESIVE MATERIAL ON THE HEADLINER SIDE OF THE DUAL LOCK FASTENER THAT IS BEING ATTACHED TO THE CHMSL OR IMPROPER REPAIR MAY RESULT.
10. Allow adhesive to cure for 1 (one) hour before proceeding to Step 12.
11. Reattach Headliner to the CHMSL Dual Lock Fastener. Apply pressure for 1 (one) minute.
12. Verify that the Headliner is properly seated by pulling on the rear of the Headliner near the rear window.
