MOISTURE IN REVERSE LAMP

LINCOLN:
2003-2004 LS

ISSUE

Some vehicles may exhibit moisture/condensation inside of the reverse lamp lens. This moisture may enter through a seal in the license plate housing and travel behind the reverse lamp and into the lamp assembly vent.

ACTION

To service, refer to the following Service Procedure.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

NOTE
ONLY REPLACE A REVERSE LAMP ASSEMBLY IF MOISTURE, RESIDUE OR WATER SPOTS ARE PRESENT INSIDE OF THE ASSEMBLY.

NOTE
THE LICENSE PLATE HOUSING MUST BE REMOVED TO ACCESS THE RETAINING CLIPS FOR THE REVERSE LAMP ASSEMBLY. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PRY OFF THE REVERSE LAMP WITH A SCREWDRIVER OR OTHER TOOL AS DAMAGE WILL RESULT.

1. Remove the affected reverse lamp assembly(s). Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 417-01.

2. After removal, inspect the reverse lamp assembly(s) for cracks or separation that would contribute to a leak.

a. If there is NO obvious cause for a leak then replace the affected reverse lamp assembly(s), and replace the rear license plate housing with revised part.

b. If there IS an obvious cause for a leak then replace only the affected reverse lamp assembly(s). DO NOT replace the rear license plate housing.

NOTE
IF THE LICENSE PLATE HOUSING IS REPLACED, ANY NON-AFFECTED REVERSE LAMP ASSEMBLY AND BOTH LICENSE PLATE LAMP ASSEMBLIES MUST BE TRANSFERRED FROM THE ORIGINAL LICENSE PLATE HOUSING TO THE REVISED HOUSING.
