Removal

Transmission

WARNING: Secure the transmission to the transmission jack with a safety chain. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury.

NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms can occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The customer needs to be notified that they can experience slightly different upshifts either (soft or firm) and that this is a temporary condition and will eventually return to normal operating condition. If transmission disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, drain the transmission fluid. Install the drain plug when finished. If the transmission is to be removed for an extended period of time, support the engine with a safety stand and a wood block.

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
2. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
3. Remove the complete exhaust system and front heat shields.








4. Remove the components in order indicated in the illustration and table.
5. If contamination is present, backflush and clean the transmission fluid cooler.

Item 1: Output Shaft Flange Coupler Removal Note





1. CAUTION: Index-mark (color paint) the bolts, washers, nuts and the flex coupling to the transmission flange to make sure they are installed in the same location. Components that are not assembled in their original location can cause driveshaft imbalance. Do not remove the bolts retaining the flex coupling to the driveshaft.

Index-mark the front driveshaft pinion flange. Remove the three nuts, washers and bolts.

1. Slide the front shaft assembly rearward and support

Item 3: Transmission Assembly Removal Note

1. WARNING: Secure the transmission to the transmission jack with a safety chain. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

Using a suitable transmission jack, support the transmission.

Item 4: Heated Oxygen Sensor Electrical Connector Removal Note





1. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor connector and remove the sensor wire retaining clip from the right side of the transmission pan rail.

Item 5: Heated Oxygen Sensor Electrical Connector Retainer Removal Note





1. Remove the heated oxygen sensor connector from the front of the transmission pan rail.

Item 9: Cable Retainer Removal Note





1. Disconnect the shift cable retainer.

Item 11: Wire Harness Retainer Removal Note





1. Disconnect the wire harness from the top of the transmission shift cable bracket.

Item 14: Solenoid Body :Harness Electrical Connector Removal Note





1. NOTE: Clean the area around connector to prevent contamination of the solenoid body connector.

Remove the screw from the solenoid body connector and disconnect tile connector.

Item 15: Wire Harness Retainers Removal Note





1. Disconnect the wire harness retainers.

Item 16: Transmission Range TR Sensor Electrical Connector Removal Note





1. Remove and discard the tie strap from the digital TR sensor connector boot.





2. Slide the rubber boot back and disconnect the digital TR sensor connector.

Item 17: Fluid Cooler Tube Bracket Removal Note





1. Remove the screws and pushpins then remove the splash shield.





2. Disconnect the wire harness from the cooler line bracket.





3. Disconnect the transmission cooler line bracket.

Item 18: Fluid Cooler Tube Nuts Removal Note





1. CAUTION: Do not damage the cooler tubes. Hold the transmission case fittings with a wrench.

Disconnect the transmission cooler tubes.

Item 22: Transmission Assembly Removal Note
1. Carefully lower the transmission from the vehicle. Make sure the transmission fluid cooler and cooler lines are cleaned at this time.
