LINCOLN:
2003 TOWN CAR
ISSUE
Some 2003 Town Car vehicles may exhibit an engine vibration at idle and/or low engine speeds. This condition may be more pronounced when the engine is cold. The vibration typically can be felt through the steering wheel, brake pedal or floor. This may be caused by the engine mounts, idle speed strategy, and exhaust damper tuning depending on vehicle production date.
ACTION
Service the vehicle using one of the following service procedures depending on vehicle production date.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Vehicles Produced Before 6/10/2002
1. Remove and replace the engine mounts with 3W1Z-6038-EA (Left) and 3W1Z-6038-DB (Right), following the engine mount removal and installation procedure in Workshop Manual, Section 303-01.
NOTE
LEAVE VEHICLE RAISED ON HOIST AFTER ENGINE MOUNT REPLACEMENT TO COMPLETE STEPS 2 THROUGH 7.
2. Remove and discard 2 (two) original rubber dampers from exhaust system H-pipe. Refer to Figure 1.
NOTE
BE CAREFUL NOT TO DAMAGE EXHAUST PIPE WHEN REMOVING ORIGINAL DAMPERS.
3. Remove and discard original rubber dampers (one from each muffler). Refer to Figure 2.
NOTE
BE CAREFUL NOT TO DAMAGE EXHAUST PIPE WHEN REMOVING ORIGINAL DAMPERS.
4. Remove exhaust H-pipe right side flange fasteners.
5. Install Flange Damper, 3W1Z-5F240-AA, at right exhaust H-pipe flange and reconnect exhaust. Torque fasteners to 30 lb-ft (40 N.m). Refer to Figure 3.
6. Remove and discard front muffler to exhaust pipe clamp from left side muffler.
7. Install Muffler Damper, 4W1Z-5F240-AA, using 1 (one) U-Bolt, W710145-S306, and 4 (four) Fasteners, W705443-S900, in place of original clamp removed in Step 6. Torque fasteners to 33 lb-ft. (45 N.m). Refer to Figure 4.
8. Lower vehicle.
9. Reprogram the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to the latest calibration level. Refer to the PCM Calibration Chart shown for details.

Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal shown (FPS 8262 - obtainable through DOES II, 25/pkg) and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
