CAUTION: Suspension fasteners are important parts because they affect performance of vital components and systems and their failure can result in major service expense. A new part with the same part number must be installed if installation is necessary. Do not use a new part of lesser quality or substitute design. Torque values must be used as specified during reassembly to make sure of correct retention of these parts.
CAUTION: The wheel knuckle/wheel hub is serviced as an assembly. Do not attempt to separate the wheel hub from the wheel knuckle.
1. For reference during the installation of an upper or lower arm, measure the distance between the center of the wheel hub and the lip of the fender with the weight of the vehicle resting on the wheel and tire assemblies.
2. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
3. Remove the rear brake disc.
4. CAUTION: The axle shaft retaining nut is a one time use item and a new nut must be installed when removed. Failure to do so can cause the nut to loosen during vehicle operation resulting in loss of vehicle control.
Remove and discard the axle shaft retaining nut.
^ To install, tighten to 300 Nm (221 ft. lbs.).
5. Disconnect the toe link from the knuckle.
1 Remove the toe link-to-wheel knuckle bolt. Discard the nut and bolt.
- To install, tighten to 55 Nm (41 ft. lbs.).
2 Disconnect the toe link.
6. Remove the ABS bolt and disconnect the ABS sensor.
^ To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
7. CAUTION: Support the axle shaft after removing it from the hub. Failure to do so can damage the axle shaft.
CAUTION: Do not use a hammer to separate the outboard CV joint from the hub. Damage to the threads and internal CV joint components can result.
Using the special tools, separate the axle shaft from the hub. Support the axle shaft.
8. Disconnect the lower arm from the wheel knuckle.
1 Remove the lower arm-to-wheel knuckle bolt. Discard the nut.
- To install, tighten to 150 Nm (111 ft. lbs.).
2 Disconnect the lower arm.
9. Remove the wheel knuckle and hub assembly.
1 NOTE: Use the hex holding feature to prevent the upper arm ball joint from turning while removing the nut.
Remove and discard the upper ball joint-to-wheel knuckle nut.
- To install, tighten to 90 Nm (66 ft. lbs.).
2 Remove the wheel knuckle and hub assembly.
10. Before tightening the upper or lower suspension arm-to-frame fasteners, position a jack under the lower arm and raise the vehicle until the distance between the center of the hub and the lip of fender is equal to the measurement taken during the removal procedure.
11. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
12. Check and, if necessary, align the rear suspension.
