3.9L V8 UNUSUAL ENGINE NOISE - SPARK KNOCK / TICKING NOISE UNDER ACCELERATION

ISSUE
Some 2005 Thunderbird and 2005-2006 Lincoln LS vehicles equipped with the 3.9L 4V engine may exhibit a knocking or ticking noise under acceleration. This could be caused by poor fuel quality or fuel with less than 91 octane rating.
ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Perform normal diagnostics. If normal diagnostics does not define the root cause of the knocking I ticking noise, proceed to Step 2.
NOTE
THE FOLLOWING SERVICE PROCEDURE WILL NOT AFFECT VEHICLE PERFORMANCE OR FUEL ECONOMY. THE FOLLOWING SERVICE PROCEDURE SHOULD BE DONE ANYTIME THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) IS REPROGRAMMED OR REPLACED ON THE VEHICLE IT WAS ORIGINALLY PERFORMED ON.
2. Connect IDS and do the following steps:
a. Vehicle Specification Screen
b. Select Tool Box
c. Module Programming
d. In the sub-menu of module programming:
(1) Select Programmable Parameters
(2) Select Fuel
(3) Parameter Source
(4) Octane Adjust / Spark Normal
(5) Select Retard
e. Exit IDS
3. Test drive vehicle to verify knocking / ticking noise is gone.
