Steering Column Shaft

Removal and Installation

CAUTION: Do not allow the steering column shaft to rotate while the intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered.

1. Depower the supplemental restraint system (SRS).
2. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
3. Remove the intermediate shaft slider bolt.
^ To install, tighten to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).

4. NOTE: Install a new steering column-to-intermediate shaft bolt.

Remove and discard the steering column-to-intermediate shaft bolt.
^ To install, tighten to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).

5. NOTE: Install a new intermediate shaft-to-steering gear bolt.

Remove and discard the intermediate shaft-to-steering gear bolt.
^ To install, tighten to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).

6. NOTE: Install 2 new intermediate shaft bearing plate nuts.

Remove and discard the 2 intermediate shaft bearing plate nuts and the plate.
^ To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 inch lbs.).
7. Remove the intermediate shaft.
8. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
