Removal and Installation
CAUTION: While repairing the power steering system, care should be taken to prevent the entry of contaminants or premature failure of the power steering components can result.
1. CAUTION: Do not allow the steering wheel to rotate while the intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered.
Hold the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position using a suitable holding device.
2. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
3. Remove the 2 tie-rod end nuts and separate the 2 tie-rod ends from the wheel knuckles.
^ To install, tighten to 80 Nm (59 ft. lbs.).
4. Remove and discard the steering line clamp plate bolt and disconnect the steering lines from the steering gear.
^ To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
5. Remove and discard the 2 O-ring seals.
6. Disconnect the variable assist power steering (VAPS) actuator electrical connector.
7. Loosen the intermediate shaft slider bolt.
^ To install, tighten to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).
8. Remove and discard the intermediate shaft-to-steering gear bolt and disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering gear.
^ To install, tighten to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).
9. Remove the 3 steering gear-to-crossmember nuts and bolts.
^ To install, tighten to 103 Nm (76 ft. lbs.).
10. Remove the steering gear.
11. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
^ Fill the power steering system.
