Part 2:
INSTALLATION
1. WARNING: Secure the transmission to the transmission jack with a safety chain. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury.
Secure the transmission to the transmission jack with a safety chain.
2. NOTE: Rotate the torque converter so that the torque converter paint mark is in the 12 o'clock position.
While raising and positioning the transmission to the engine, install the wire harness to the top of the transmission.
3. Carefully position the transmission in alignment with the engine and install the transmission-to-engine screws.
^ Tighten to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
4. Install the torque converter nuts.
^ Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
5. Install the converter access cover.
6. CAUTION: Do not damage the cooler tubes. Hold the transmission case fitting with a wrench.
Connect the transmission cooler tubes.
^ Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
7. Install the cooler line bracket.
^ Tighten to 18 Nm (13 ft. lbs.).
8. Connect the wire harness to the cooler line bracket.
9. Install the splash shield, then install the screws and pushpin.
10. Reconnect the digital transmission range TR sensor connector.
11. Slide the boot over the digital TR sensor connector and install a new tie strap.
12. Connect the wire harness retainers to the transmission.
13. CAUTION: Damage will occur to the solenoid body assembly if the screw is tightened above the specification.
NOTE: Always install new O-ring seals on the vehicle harness connector.
NOTE: Use petroleum jelly to lubricate the O-ring seals to aid in the installation process.
Install and lubricate new O-ring seals on the transmission connector and connect the connector.
^ Tighten to 5 Nm (44 inch lbs.).
14. Install the shift cable bracket screws and bracket.
^ Tighten to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).
15. Connect the turbine shaft speed (TSS), output shaft speed (OSS) and intermediate shaft speed sensor electrical connectors.
16. Install the wire harness to the top of the transmission shift cable bracket.
17. Connect the transmission shift cable eyelet to the manual lever.
18. Install the shift cable to the rear transmission support.
19. Position the rear transmission crossmember and install the transmission crossmember-to-floor pan screws.
^ Tighten to 55 Nm (41 ft. lbs.).
20. Install the transmission insulator-to-extension housing center screw.
^ Tighten to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
21. Install the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) connector to the front of the transmission pan rail.
22. Connect the HO2S connector and install the sensor wire retaining clip to the RH side of the transmission pan rail.
23. Install the driveshaft.
24. Install the exhaust system and front heat shields.
25. Use the following guidelines for the in-line transmission fluid filter:
^ If the transmission was overhauled and the vehicle was equipped with an in-line fluid filter, install a new in-line fluid filter.
^ If the transmission was overhauled and the vehicle was not equipped with an in-line fluid filter, install a new in-line fluid filter kit.
^ If the transmission is being installed for a non-internal repair, do not install an in-line filter or filter kit.
^ If installing a new or a Ford-authorized remanufactured transmission, install the in-line transmission fluid filter that is supplied.
Prior to lowering the vehicle, install a new in-line transmission filter or a filter kit.
26. NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms can occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The customer needs to be notified that they can experience slightly different upshifts (either soft or firm) and that this is a temporary condition and will eventually return to normal operating condition.
Connect the battery ground cable.
27. Carry out the fluid level check.
28. Verify that the shift cable is correctly adjusted.
29. Check the operation of the transmission and inspect for leaks.
