Removal and Installation

WARNING: Use of any other than approved DOT 3 brake fluid will cause permanent damage to brake components and will render the brakes inoperative. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

WARNING: Brake fluid contains polyglycol ethers and polyglycols. Avoid contact with eyes. Wash hands thoroughly after handling. If brake fluid contacts eyes, flush eyes with running water for 15 minutes. Get medical attention if irritation persists. If taken internally, drink water and induce vomiting. Get medical attention immediately. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

CAUTION: Brake fluid is harmful to painted and plastic surfaces. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash it with water.

1. Check the brake fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir.
^ If required, remove the fluid until the brake master cylinder reservoir is half full.

2. WARNING: If the vehicle is equipped with air suspension, the electrical power to the air suspension system must be shut off prior to hoisting, jacking or towing an air suspension vehicle. This can be accomplished by turning off the air suspension switch located in the luggage compartment. Failure to do so can result in unexpected inflation or deflation of the air springs, which can result in shifting of the vehicle during these operations. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Maintenance/Service and Repair.

3. CAUTION: Do not pry in the caliper sight hole to retract the pistons, as this can damage the pistons and boots.

CAUTION: Do not allow the brake caliper to hang from the brake hose or damage to the hose can occur.

Remove the 2 brake caliper bolts and position the caliper aside.
^ To install, tighten to 36 Nm (27 ft. lbs.).
^ Support the caliper using mechanic's wire.
4. Remove the pads and stainless steel slides from the anchor plate.
^ Discard the slides.

5. CAUTION: Protect the piston and boots when pushing the caliper piston into the caliper piston bores.

If installing new brake pads, using a suitable tool and a worn brake pad, compress the disc brake caliper pistons into the caliper.
6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
^ Fill the brake master cylinder reservoir with brake fluid. Install the brake master cylinder filler cap.
^ Apply the brake pedal several times before driving the vehicle.
^ Test the brakes for normal operation.
