Removal
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Battery.
2. Using the parking brake release handle, release the parking brake control.
3. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Maintenance/Service and Repair.
4. Pull the parking brake adjuster clip downward.
5. Apply the parking brake control fully.
6. Push up on the parking brake adjuster clip to lock the adjuster.
7. Using the parking brake release handle, release the parking brake control.
8. Disconnect the front parking brake cable and conduit from the cable union.
9. Unclip the scuff plate, the cowl side trim panel and remove.
10. Disconnect the parking brake release handle cable from the parking brake control.
11. Remove the screws and the instrument panel steering column cover with the parking brake release handle.
12. Remove the 5 instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement bolts and the reinforcement.
^ To install, tighten to 4 Nm (35 inch lbs.).
13. Loosen the powertrain control module (PCM) wiring connector bolt and disconnect the connector.
14. Loosen the bulkhead wiring connector bolt and disconnect the connector.
^ Position the bulkhead wiring connector out of the way for access.
^ Push the instrument panel (IP) side of the bulkhead wiring connector into the passenger compartment.
15. Remove the shake brace to parking brake control bolt.
16. Remove the IP bolt.
^ To install, tighten to 12 Nm (9 ft. lbs.).
17. Remove the IP retaining bolt.
^ To install, tighten to 12 Nm (9 ft. lbs.).
18. Pull the IP slightly rearward and retain it using a small block of wood.
19. Disconnect the parking brake release vacuum hose from the parking brake release control motor.
20. Disconnect the electrical connector from the parking brake switch.
21. Disconnect the front parking brake cable and conduit from the parking brake control.
22. Remove the 3 parking brake control bolts.
^ To install, tighten to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).
23. Remove the parking brake control.
24. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
^ Adjust the parking brake cable tension. For additional information, refer to Parking Brake Cable Adjustment.
