Engine Ignition
ENGINE IGNITIONThis vehicle uses a coil-on-plug electronic ignition system. The coil-on-plug ignition system consists of the following components:
- Powertrain control module (PCM)
- Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor
- Ignition coil-on-plug
- Spark plugs
The PCM and the CKP sensor are also part of the electronic engine controls system. Refer to Computers and Control Systems.
Eight separate ignition coils:
- are controlled by the PCM for the correct firing sequence.
- are mounted directly above each spark plug.
The spark plugs:
- change the high voltage pulse into a spark which ignites the fuel and air mixture.
- originally equipped on the vehicle have a platinum active electrode for long life.
