FRONT SEATS SQUEAK/RATTLE

ISSUE
Some 2006-2007 Fusion, Milan, 2006 Zephyr and 2007 MKZ vehicles may exhibit a noise concern coming from one or both front seats when occupied while driving. This may be caused by the seat track making contact with the vehicle body.

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

WARNING
THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) MUST BE DEPOWERED WHEN PERFORMING THIS REPAIR. THIS SERVICE PROCEDURE MAY REQUIRE HANDLING OF THE VEHICLES SRS AND AIR BAG MODULE. FOLLOW ALL WARNINGS AND STEPS IN THE WORKSHOP MANUAL.

NOTE
THE SRS MUST BE FULLY OPERATIONAL AND FREE OF FAULTS BEFORE RELEASING THE VEHICLE TO THE CUSTOMER.

NOTE
PASSENGER AND DRIVER SEAT ARE SHOWN.

1. Remove the passenger seat. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 501-10.








2. Using a die grinder, grind 0.04" (1 mm) on the right side of the hole on the outboard cross member hole. (Figure 1) If necessary, remove an additional 0.04" (1 mm) in order to get both the lower and upper sheet metal plates to match. (Figure 2)

NOTE
DO NOT GRIND TOO MUCH ON THE OUTBOARD CROSS MEMBER HOLE SHEET METAL PLATES, ENSURE THAT THERE IS NO ROUGHNESS ON THE EDGE.

3. Clean the area using Motorcraft(R) Brake Cleaner.

4. Obtain UHM tape (164-R4904) from the Rotunda Squeak and Rattle Kit (164-R4900).





5. Using a pair of scissors, cut four (4) squares, 1-1/2" (40 mm) by 1-1/2" (40 mm), On each individual square, cut a cross in the center part of each square of the four (4) squares. (Figure 3)








6. Put the tape squares on the inboard and outboard cross member holes and two (2) of the tape squares on the inboard and outboard seat track pins. (Figures 4 and 5)





7. Add Kyrtox grease (164-R4906) from the Rotunda Squeak and Rattle Kit (164-R4900) on top of the square tapes for both outboard and inboard pins and both inboard and outboard cross member holes. (Figure 6)





8. Inspect the lower side shield clip for proper installation by visually looking from the underside of the seat ensuring that the lower shield is properly installed in the track. If the clip is missing, replace the lower side shield. (Figure 7)

9. Reinstall the passenger seat, Refer to WSM, Section 501-10. Proceed to Step 10.

10. Position the driver seat to the UP position, so the bottom of the seat track is exposed.





11. While sitting in the driver seat, gently grab the lower side of the seat side shield and lightly push up and down on the cover. If the shield is loose, replace the shield. If the shield is tight, proceed to Step 12. (Figure 8)








12. On the driver rear seat lift link, (Figure 9) Clean both sides of the lift link with a wire brush and apply Kyrtox grease (164-R4906) from the Rotunda Squeak and Rattle Kit (164-R4900) to the contact points. (Figure 10)

13. Vehicle equipped with power passenger seat?

a. If equipped with power passenger side seat go to step 14.

b. For all others go to step 17.

14. Position the passenger seat to the up position, so the bottom of the seat track is exposed.








15. On the Passenger rear seat lift link, (Figure 12) Clean both sides of the lift link with a wire brush and apply Kyrtox grease (164-R4906) from the Rotunda Squeak and Rattle Kit (164-R4900) to both contact points. (Figure 13)

16. Reposition the seat to its original position.





17. On the front driver seat inboard lift link, apply Kyrtox grease (164-R4906) from the Rotunda Squeak and Rattle Kit (164-R4900) to both contact points. (Figure 11)

18. Reposition the seat to its original position.
