Principles of Operation

NOTE: The Smart Junction Box (SJB) is also known as the Generic Electronic Module (GEM).

Vehicles With Integrated Keyhead Transmitter (IKT)

The SJB monitors the door ajar switches (they are open with the door closed and closed with the door open), the hood switch (closed with the hood closed and open with the hood open) and the luggage compartment lid ajar switch (closed with the luggage compartment lid closed and open with the luggage compartment lid open). If the perimeter alarm has been armed when the SJB receives a signal from one or more of the monitored switches indicating unauthorized entry into the vehicle, the SJB grounds the horn relay and applies voltage to the turn signal lamps in regular intervals (flashes).

An activated alarm can either be deactivated or disarmed. Pressing the panic button on the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter (part of the Integrated Keyhead Transmitter (IKT) key) deactivates the perimeter alarm, but does not disarm the alarm.

The alarm can be disarmed by:

- pressing the UNLOCK button on the RKE transmitter (part of the IKT key).
- turning the door lock cylinder to the UNLOCK position.
- using a valid, programmed (PATS or IKT) key to turn the ignition to the ON position.
- entering the correct vehicle unlock code on the keyless entry keypad.

The SJB monitors the key-in-ignition switch and does not allow the perimeter anti-theft feature to arm until after the key is removed from the ignition lock cylinder, all doors/hood/luggage compartment lid are closed and 20 seconds have elapsed after locking the vehicle. Each input has its own 20-second pre-arm phase, depending on when it was closed after the arm command was given (when the doors are electronically locked). After all of these criteria have been met, the perimeter anti-theft alarm feature arms.

There is no visual (or audible) indicator of the alarm system arming or disarming.

Pressing the panic button on the RKE transmitter (part of the IKT key) deactivates the perimeter alarm, but does not disarm the alarm.

Vehicles With Intelligent Access (IA)

The Remote Function Actuator (RFA) module monitors the door ajar switches (they are open with the door closed and closed with the door open), the hood switch (closed with the hood closed and open with the hood open) and the luggage compartment lid ajar switch (closed with the luggage compartment lid closed). If the perimeter alarm has been armed when the RFA module receives a signal from one or more of the monitored switches indicating unauthorized entry into the vehicle, the RFA module sends a message over the MS-CAN to the SJB, instructing it to intermittently (in regular intervals) ground the horn relay and also intermittently (in regular intervals) send voltage to the turn signal lamps. The horn relay closes, supplying voltage to the horn. The SJB cycles the ground to the horn relay and voltage to the turn signal lamps, on and off, while the system is activated.

The RFA module monitors the ignition state and does not allow the perimeter anti-theft feature to arm until after the ignition state has transitioned to the OFF mode, all doors/hood/luggage compartment lid are closed and 20 seconds have elapsed after locking the vehicle. Each input has its own 20-second pre-arm phase, depending on when it was closed after the arm command was given (when the doors are electronically locked). After all of these criteria have been met, the perimeter anti-theft alarm feature arms.

Panic Alarm (All Vehicles)

The panic alarm is operated from the RKE transmitter (part of the IKT key or the IA key). Pressing the panic button on the RKE transmitter causes the horn to sound and the turn signal lamps to flash for 2.75 minutes. The panic alarm can be activated when the perimeter alarm system is armed or disarmed with the ignition in the OFF mode. The system is only disabled when the ignition is in the ON, ACC or START mode. Deactivating a triggered panic alarm is done by pressing the panic button again.
