Pinpoint Test G: The Keyless Entry Keypad Illumination Is Inoperative/Does Not Operate Correctly
Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 117, Remote Keyless Entry and Alarm for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number
Normal Operation
When the keyless entry keypad is touched, the Smart Junction Box (SJB) sends power to the keyless entry keypad on circuit CPK28 (WH/GN) to illuminate the keypad. The keyless entry keypad is grounded on circuit GD133 (BK).
The keyless entry keypad is a touch sensitive capacitive sensor. When a finger touches the keypad it changes the capacitance of the sensor in the area of the finger touch. The keypad is then able to determine which area was touched and sends a ground signal to the SJB on the corresponding reference circuit(s). The keypad only works when touched with a finger. The keyless entry keypad does not work when gloves are worn. The gloves act as an insulator and do not allow the finger to change the sensor capacitance.
- DTC B1624 (Lamp Keypad Output Open Circuit) - a continuous and on-demand DTC that sets when the SJB detects the keyless entry keypad illumination output circuit CPK28 (WH/GN) is open or shorted to voltage.
- DTC B1626 (Lamp Keypad Output Short Circuit To Ground) - an on-demand DTC that sets when the SJB detects the keyless entry keypad illumination output circuit CPK28 (WH/GN) is shorted to ground.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Keyless entry keypad
- SJB
PINPOINT TEST G: THE KEYLESS ENTRY KEYPAD ILLUMINATION IS INOPERATIVE/DOES NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY
NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
-------------------------------------------------
G1 CHECK THE KEYLESS ENTRY KEYPAD ILLUMINATION
- Ignition OFF.
- Check the keyless entry keypad illumination.
- Is the keyless entry keypad illumination always on?
Yes
GO to G8.
No
GO to G2.
-------------------------------------------------
G2 CHECK THE KEYLESS ENTRY KEYPAD OPERATION
- Touch anywhere on the keyless entry keypad.
- Does the round indicator on the top of the keypad light up?
Yes
GO to G3.
No
Go To Pinpoint Test F. Pinpoint Test F: The Doors Do Not Lock/Unlock Using The Keyless Entry Keypad
-------------------------------------------------
G3 CHECK THE RECORDED SJB DTCs FROM THE SELF-TEST
- Check the recorded results from the SJB self-test.
- Is DTC B1626 present?
Yes
GO to G4.
No
GO to G6.
-------------------------------------------------
G4 CHECK THE KEYLESS ENTRY KEYPAD FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Disconnect: Keyless Entry Keypad C500.
- Clear the DTCs, then repeat the SJB self-test.
- Is DTC B1626 recorded?
Yes
GO to G5.
No
INSTALL a new keyless entry keypad. REFER to Keyless Entry Keypad Service and Repair. TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
G5 CHECK CIRCUIT CPK28 (WH/GN) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: SJB C2280c.
- Measure the resistance between the keyless entry keypad C500-2, circuit CPK28 (WH/GN), harness side and ground.
- Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
Yes
GO to G9.
No
REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
-------------------------------------------------
G6 CHECK FOR SJB OUTPUT
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: SJB DataLogger.
- Measure the voltage between the keyless entry keypad C500-2, circuit CPK28 (WH/GN), harness side and ground while active commanding the SJB PID (KY_PAD_LMP) ON.
- Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
Yes
INSTALL a new keyless entry keypad. REFER to Keyless Entry Keypad Service and Repair. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
GO to G7.
-------------------------------------------------
G7 CHECK CIRCUIT CPK28 (WH/GN) FOR AN OPEN
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: SJB C2280c.
- Measure the resistance between the keyless entry keypad C500-2, circuit CPK28 (WH/GN), harness side and the SJB C2280c-11, circuit CPK28 (WH/GN), harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to G9.
No
REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
G8 CHECK CIRCUIT CPK28 (WH/GN) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Disconnect: SJB C2280c.
- Ignition ON.
- Observe the keypad illumination.
- Is the keypad still illuminated?
Yes
REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
GO to G9.
-------------------------------------------------
G9 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION
- Disconnect all the SJB connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new SJB. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
