Pinpoint Test X: The Powertrain Malfunction (Wrench) Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On
Normal Operation
The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) receives the powertrain malfunction data from the PCM for the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) status and the transaxle status and from the 4X4 control module for the All-Wheel Drive (AWD) status over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. When a fault condition exists in ETC system or in the transaxle, the PCM provides the IPC with a message to turn the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on. When a AWD fault condition exists, the 4X4 control module sends the IPC a message to turn the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on.
If the ETC or transmission message is missing for greater than 5 seconds, the IPC sets DTC U0100:00 and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on.
If the AWD status message is missing for greater than 5 seconds, the IPC sets DTC U0102:00 and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on.
NOTE: If U0100:00 is set in the IPC, other symptoms may also be present such as an inoperative speedometer, tachometer or temperature gauge.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- ETC concern
- AWD concern
- Transmission concern
- IPC
PINPOINT TEST X: THE POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION (WRENCH) WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
-------------------------------------------------
X1 CARRY OUT THE IPC INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IPC DataLogger.
- Select the IPC powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator (TRANSA_LMP) active command. Command the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on and off while observing the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator.
- Does the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator illuminate when commanded on, and turn off when commanded off?
Yes
GO to X2.
No
INSTALL a new IPC. REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
X2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IPC SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded DTCs from the IPC self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
For DTC U0100:00, Go To Pinpoint Test AO. Pinpoint Tests AO: DTC U0100:00
For DTC U0102:00, Go To Pinpoint Test AP. Pinpoint Tests AP: DTC U0102:00
For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts. Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes
No
GO to X3.
-------------------------------------------------
X3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded PCM DTCs from the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
DIAGNOSE all PCM DTCs first. REFER to Computers and Control Systems Information.
No
GO to X4.
-------------------------------------------------
X4 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE 4X4 CONTROL MODULE SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded DTCs from the 4X4 control module self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
DIAGNOSE all 4X4 control module DTCs first.
No
INSTALL a new 4x4 control module. TEST the system for normal operation.
If the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator is still never or always on, INSTALL a new PCM. TEST the system for normal operation.
