Steering Column Shaft - Intermediate









Removal and Installation

NOTICE: Do not allow the steering column shaft to rotate while the intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring may result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information, refer to Air Bag Systems.

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.

2. NOTE: Use a steering wheel holding device (such as Hunter(R) 28-75-1 or equivalent).

Using a suitable holding device, hold the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.





3. Remove the 2 screws and the steering column opening trim panel.

4. Remove the steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt.
- To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).

5. Remove the 3 steering column shaft boot nuts.
- To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).

6. Remove the steering column shaft-to-steering gear bolt.
- To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).

7. Remove the steering column shaft.

8. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
