Shift Interlock: Service and Repair

Brake Shift Interlock Override

NOTE: If it is necessary to use the override procedure to move the selector lever out of the PARK position, it is possible that a fuse has blown and the brake lights are not operational. Before driving the vehicle, verify that the brake lights are working. This vehicle is equipped with a brake shift interlock feature that prevents the selector lever from being moved out of PARK when the ignition is in the ON position unless the brake pedal is depressed.
If the selector lever cannot be moved out of the PARK position when the ignition is in the ON position and the brake pedal is depressed:

1. Apply the parking brake and remove the ignition key.

2. Remove the selector lever knob. For additional information, refer to the Selector Lever Knob Selector Lever Knob removal and installation procedure.

3. Remove the center console trim.

4. Remove the cup holder lid trim panel.

5. Remove the cup holder retaining screws and the cup holder.

6. Slide the selector lever bezel back and lift to access the electrical connectors.

7. Disconnect the selector lever bezel electrical connectors and remove the selector lever bezel.

8. With a suitable tool, push the Brake Shift Interlock Actuator (BSIA) inward.

9. Put the selector lever in the NEUTRAL position.
