INTERMITTENT AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR -
DTCS B0028, B1213 WHEN PASSENGER CLIMATE
CONTROL SEAT COMMANDED ON
FORD:
2010-2011 Taurus
LINCOLN:
2010-2011 MKS
ISSUE
Some 2010-2011 Taurus and MKS vehicles may exhibit an intermittent air bag warning indicator on with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) B0028 and/or B1213. This may be caused by radio frequency (RF) interference created by the climate control seat system when the passenger climate control seat is commanded on, turning on heated or cooled function. If the seat is not commanded on in a subsequent key cycle, the air bag warning indicator will not illuminate because the fault is not present, but the codes from the key cycle where the fault was detected will be stored in the restraints control module (RCM).
ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Position both front seats to their most upward and rearward positions.
2. Disconnect negative battery cable.
3. Disconnect C3050 (MKS) or C3382 (Taurus) is a 34-pin located under passenger front seat and release the harness retainer to allow access to harness.
4. Disconnect C340 (MKS) or C3381 (Taurus) is a 34-pin located under driver seat and release the harness retainer to allow access to harness.
5. Loosen driver and passenger side floor console carpeted lower trim panels. (Figure 1)
6. Remove driver side front scuff plate trim panel. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 501-05.
7. Remove driver side lower cowl panel side trim. Refer to WSM, Section 501-05.
8. Remove G301 fastener near bottom of driver side A-pillar.
9. Remove hold-down pushpin from driver and passenger side front carpet. (Figure 2)
10. Remove front seat track covers from driver and passenger side.
11. Starting from driver side:
a. Route service wire harness end labeled C-340, through the center of the floor console above the rear seat floor duct. (Figure 3)
b. Continue routing under carpet, positioning along contour of the rear seat floor duct and exiting under the passenger front seat. (Figures 4 and 5)
12. Route the harness end labeled C-3050 along the contour of the rear seat floor duct and under the carpet exiting under the driver's seat. (Figure 4)
13. Route harness end:
a. With eyelet under the carpet, along rear of driver's floor well, exiting at the driver's door sill. (Figure 6)
b. Then along side the main body harness 14A005 to the left hand lower A-pillar. (Figure 7)
14. Locate circuit 5BB22 (BN/RD) within main body harness 14A005.
a. On an MKS, there are two (2) BN/RD wires within the harness. Circuit 5BB22 is the smaller (14 gauge) of the two (2) wires.
15. Cut circuit SBB22 within 100 mm (4.0") of the front end of the plastic harness tray.
16. Verify correct circuit by checking for continuity between forward end of wire and fuse 22 in battery junction box.
17. Splice service harness wire (BN/RD) to the forward end of circuit SBB22 (fused side). Refer to Wiring Manual, Section 5-1, Recommended splicing method - crimp for 10-22 gauge diameter wire to like wire diameter.
18. Tape the main body harness and position it as originally routed.
19. Position the harness eyelet under G301 terminal, install fastener and torque to 12 N.m (106 lb-in).
20. Starting with the existing harness disconnected under the driver's seat, cut each respective wire 100 mm (4.0") from C340 (MKS) or C3381 (Taurus) corresponding to the service harness four (4) wires.
21. Splice service harness wires to the corresponding body harness wires (connector side). Refer to Wiring Manual, Section 5-1, Recommended splicing method - crimp for 10-22 gauge diameter wire to like wire diameter.
22. Secure harness within retainer and connect C340 (MKS) or C3381 (Taurus).
23. Under the passenger front seat, cut each respective wire 100 mm (4.0") from C3050 (MKS) or C3382 (Taurus) corresponding to service harness six (6) wires.
24. Splice service harness wires to the corresponding body harness wires (connector side). Refer to Wiring Manual, Section 5-1, Recommended splicing method - crimp for 10-22 gauge diameter wire to like wire diameter. Coil any excess service harness length under the seat and secure it to the existing harness.
25. Secure harness within retainer and connect C3050 (MKS) or C3382 (Taurus).
26. Install carpet hold-down pushpins, seat track covers, floor console lower trim panels, lower cowl panel side trim, and scuff plate trim panel.
