Communications Network

Pinpoint Test AF: No Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) Communication, All Modules Are Not Responding

Normal Operation

The Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) uses an unshielded twisted pair cable.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Wiring, terminals or connectors

- Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) (if equipped)

- Audio Control Module (ACM)

- Audio Digital Signal Processing (DSP) module (if equipped)

- Driver Door Module (DDM) (if equipped)

- Driver Seat Module (DSM) (if equipped)

- Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module (DCSM) (if equipped)

- Front Controls Interface Module (FCIM)

- Front Display Interface Module (FDIM)

- Global Positioning System Module (GPSM) (if equipped)

- Headlamp Control Module 2 (HCM-2) (if equipped)

- HVAC module (if equipped)

- Interior Lighting Control Module (ILCM) (if equipped)

- Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) (gateway module)

- Remote Function Actuator (RFA) module (if equipped)

- Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Left (SOD-L) (if equipped)

- Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right (SOD-R) (if equipped)

- Smart Junction Box (SJB)

PINPOINT TEST AF : NO MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) COMMUNICATION, ALL MODULES ARE NOT RESPONDING

NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

NOTE: Most faults are due to connector and/or wiring concerns. Carry out a thorough inspection and verification before proceeding with the pinpoint test. Module Communications Network

NOTE: Failure to disconnect the battery when instructed will result in false resistance readings.

AF26 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) C3342.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.





Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to AF27.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF69.

AF27 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - DDM (Driver Door Module)

- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with a Driver Door Module (DDM).

Is the vehicle equipped with a DDM (Driver Door Module)?

Yes
GO to AF28.

No
GO to AF29.

AF28 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE DDM (Driver Door Module) DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: DDM (Driver Door Module) C501A.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.





Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to AF29.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF70.

AF29 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - HCM-2 (Headlamp Control Module 2)

- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with a Headlamp Control Module 2 (HCM-2).

Is the vehicle equipped with an HCM-2 (Headlamp Control Module 2)?

Yes
GO to AF30.

No
GO to AF31.

AF30 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE HCM-2 (Headlamp Control Module 2) DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: HCM-2 (Headlamp Control Module 2) Inline C913.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.





Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to AF31.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF71.

AF31 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - SIDE OBSTACLE DETECTION

- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with a side obstacle detection.

Is the vehicle equipped with an side obstacle detection?

Yes
GO to AF32.

No
GO to AF34.

AF32 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE SOD-L (Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Left) DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: SOD-L (Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Left) C4369.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.





Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to AF33.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF72.

AF33 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE SOD-R (Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right) DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: SOD-R (Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right) C4370.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.





Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
REPAIR the circuit. CONNECT all modules. CONNECT the negative battery cable. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF73.

AF34 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE SJB (Smart Junction Box) DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: SJB (Smart Junction Box) C2280B.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.





Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF57.

No
If the vehicle is equipped with a Remote Function Actuator (RFA) module, GO to AF35.

If the vehicle is not equipped with an RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module, GO to AF36.

AF35 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE RFA (Remote Function Actuator) MODULE DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: RFA (Remote Function Actuator) Module C2153D.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.





Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF58.

No
GO to AF36.

AF36 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE ACM (Audio Control Module) DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: Audio Control Module (ACM) C240C.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.





Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF59.

No
If the vehicle is equipped with an audio Digital Signal Processing (DSP) module, GO to AF37.

If the vehicle is not equipped with an audio DSP (Digital Signal Processing) module, GO to AF38.

AF37 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE AUDIO DSP (Digital Signal Processing) MODULE DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: Audio DSP (Digital Signal Processing) Module C4326A.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.





Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF60.

No
GO to AF38.

AF38 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE FCIM (Front Controls Interface Module) DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: Front Controls Interface Module (FCIM) C2402.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.





Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF61.

No
If the vehicle is equipped with a Front Display Interface Module (FDIM), GO to AF39.

If the vehicle is not equipped with an FDIM (Front Display Interface Module), GO to AF40.

AF39 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE FDIM (Front Display Interface Module) DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: FDIM (Front Display Interface Module) C2123.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.





Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF62.

No
GO to AF40.

AF40 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE HVAC MODULE DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: HVAC Module C2356A or C228A.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.





Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF63.

No
If the vehicle is equipped with a Global Positioning System Module (GPSM), GO to AF41.

If the vehicle is not equipped with a GPSM (Global Positioning System Module), GO to AF42.

AF41 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE GPSM (Global Positioning System Module) DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: GPSM (Global Positioning System Module) C2300.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.





Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF64.

No
GO to AF42.

AF42 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) C220.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.





Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF65.

No
If the vehicle is equipped with an Interior Lighting Control Module (ILCM), GO to AF43.

If the vehicle is not equipped with an ILCM (Interior Lighting Control Module), GO to AF44.

AF43 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE ILCM (Interior Lighting Control Module) DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: ILCM (Interior Lighting Control Module) C2411.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.





Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF66.

No
GO to AF44.

AF44 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - DSM (Driver Seat Module)

- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with a Driver Seat Module (DSM).

Is the vehicle equipped with a DSM (Driver Seat Module)?

Yes
GO to AF45.

No
GO to AF46.

AF45 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE DSM (Driver Seat Module) DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: DSM (Driver Seat Module) C341D.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.





Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF67.

No
GO to AF46.

AF46 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module)

- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with a Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module (DCSM).

Is the vehicle equipped with a DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module)?

Yes
GO to AF47.

No
GO to AF48.

AF47 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module) DISCONNECTED

- Disconnect: DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module) C3265C.

- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.





Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF68.

No
GO to AF48.
