Ignition Switch: Adjustments

Ignition Switch:

Before attempting ignition switch adjustment because of a "no start" condition, ensure that the switch itself is not defective. Check that the switch functions as follows:

1. In ACCESSORY, the accessory circuit is operative, the steering wheel is locked and the automatic shift lever cannot be moved.
2. In LOCK, all ignition switch electrical circuits are inoperative, the steering wheel is locked and the automatic shift lever cannot be moved.
3. In OFF, all ignition switch electrical circuits are inoperative, the steering wheel is unlocked and the automatic shift lever can be moved.
4. In ON (RUN), all ignition switch circuits are operative (except starter motor and warning lamp check circuits), the steering wheel is unlocked and the automatic shift lever can be moved.
5. In START, only engine ignition, starter motor and warning lamp check circuits are operative. The steering wheel is unlocked and the automatic shift lever can be moved.

ADJUSTMENT

1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Turn key switch completely counter-clockwise to the LOCK position.
3. Remove shrouds around steering column as necessary to gain access to ignition switch.
4. Loosen switch mounting nuts and move switch down (forward) but do not apply excessive force.
5. Tighten nuts, reconnect negative battery cable and check switch operation as described above.

CAUTION: The technician should be in the driver's seat with the parking brake applied before checking the results of an adjustment. Do not use a remote starter switch.

6. If switch does not function as specified, repeat adjustment procedure.
7. After adjustment, torque mounting nuts to 3.32 - 5.31 ftlb (4.5 - 7.2 Nm) and replace steering column shrouds.
