Ignition Switch: Description and Operation
Ignition Switch:
The Ignition Switch, attached to the top of the steering column beneath the dash, is operated by a rod through the lock actuator rack and pinion driven by the key cylinder. Rotating the key clockwise from the full counter-clockwise stop, positions are ACCESSORY, LOCK, OFF, ON (RUN), and START. On vehicles with manual transmission, a push button steering wheel lock mechanism is located on top of the steering column near the key switch. The button must be pushed before the key can be rotated from OFF to LOCK and then removed. On vehicles with automatic transmission, the key cannot be turned to LOCK unless the shift lever is in "P" position.
If the switch is in good condition and properly adjusted:
1. In ACCESSORY, the accessory circuit is operative, the steering wheel is locked and the automatic shift lever cannot be moved.
2. In LOCK, all ignition switch electrical circuits are inoperative, the steering wheel is locked and the automatic shift lever cannot be moved.
3. In OFF, all ignition switch electrical circuits are inoperative, the steering wheel is unlocked and the automatic shift lever can be moved.
4. In ON (RUN), all ignition switch circuits are operative (except starter motor and warning lamp check circuits), the steering wheel is unlocked and the automatic shift lever can be moved.
5. In START, only engine ignition, starter motor and warning lamp check circuits are operative. The steering wheel is unlocked and the automatic shift lever can be moved.
