A/T - E40D Second Gear Starts

TECHNICAL BULLETIN # 229

DATE: 1994

TRANSMISSION: A4LD

SUBJECT: Second gear starts

APPLICATION: Ford, Mazda, Merkur

A4LD SECOND GEAR STARTS
(Models with a 3-4 shift solenoid)

A second gear start (it feels like second gear) in the overdrive position (OK in D3) is usually caused by a 3-4 shift solenoid that is stuck in the 4th gear position. To verify the condition, put the shifter in the OD position (engine running, vehicle stationary) and try to tighten the overdrive adjustment screw (figure 1). If the screw won't turn, the overdrive band is applied. The transmission is actually overdriving first gear. Use the following procedure to isolate the problem.

Step 1

Disconnect the solenoid wire harness. If the problem is still there, go to step 2. If the problem is gone, the computer is sending a 4th gear signal or the 3-4 shift solenoid "ground" wire is shorted to ground. Check the case connector with an ohmmeter for a short to ground on pin # 1. If the case connector and solenoid are not shorted, check the vehicle harness for a short to ground (computer disconnected). If the harness checks out OK, replace the computer.

Step 2

Check the solenoid: When you blow into the solenoid (solenoid off) air should come out of the holes marked "B". When you energize the solenoid, air should come out of the holes marked "A". The part number for a replacement solenoid is E8TZ-7M107A.

Note
If the solenoid you have is the 1st design it is a good idea to replace it.
