TRANSMISSION SPRING IN CONVERTER CHANNEL
DESCRIPTION
A4LD automatic transmissions built after August 21, 1991 have a spring installed in the transmission case worm trail (see Figure 1). This spring is used to trap large machining chips which can cause the converter lock-up valve (in the main control of the transmission) to stick, resulting in engine stalling.
If disassembly and assembly of the A4LD automatic transmission is required, make sure that the following service items are considered:
1. Transmissions built prior to August 21, 1991 do not have a spring in the case worm trail and should not have one installed.
2. Transmissions built on or after August 21, 1991 should not have the spring reinstalled in the case worm trail.
To determine the manufacture date of the transmission, use the chart in Figure 2.
