Repair Procedures
REPAIR PROCEDURESIf the oil leak is not located at the rear main oil seal or oil pan, repair the leak as per the applicable Navajo Workshop Manual repair procedure.
If the oil leak is located at the rear main seal or oil pan, proceed to the following instructions:
1. Remove the engine from the vehicle. Refer to Section B-01 in the Workshop Manual.
2. Mount the engine on an engine stand with the oil pan up (figure 2).
3. Remove the oil pan retaining bolts and remove the oil pan, windage tray, oil pump and rear main bearing cap.
4. Thoroughly clean the oil pan. Be sure all the old sealer is removed from the oil pan's gasket groove and sealing area.
5. Thoroughly clean the rear main bearing cap. Use a scraper and wire wheel to remove all the old sealer from the joint faces, "wedge seal" area and grooves (figure 2).
6. Thoroughly clean the cylinder block's sealing area for the oil pan and rear main bearing cap joint area. All old sealer must be removed from these areas.
7. Thoroughly clean all the residual oil from the transmission "bell housing" area and the rear of the cylinder block. Check with the ultraviolet light to make sure all residual oil is cleared from this area.
8. After all the parts have been thoroughly cleared, it is extremely important that they are wiped down with a cleaner that leaves no residue such as denatured alcohol.
