Passenger Seat Back - Rattles When Unoccupied

APPLICABLE MODELS/VINS

1991-93 Navajo built before 9/20/93 with premium bucket seat or 60/40 split bench seats.

1994 B-Series built before 9/20/93 with premium bucket seat or 60/40 split bench seats.

NOTE:
The build date is stamped in yellow paint on the radiator core support under the hood.

DESCRIPTION

A rattle noise may be heard from the passenger seat back when the seat is unoccupied. This noise is caused by the seat back pivot bushing. The design of the bushing has changed to prevent rattle, looseness and reduce wear. Customers complaining of this noise should have the seat back frame assembly replaced according to the instructions in this bulletin.

REPAIR PROCEDURE - Removal

1. Verify the complaint.

2. Remove the front seat and track assembly.

3. Remove the restraint slide bar, if equipped.





4. Remove the inboard pivot cover (one push pin) (see illustration).

5. Remove the outboard side shield (two screws).

6. Remove the tip slide adjuster rod, if equipped.

7. Remove the front seat center arm rest and link, if equipped.

8. Remove the front seat back assembly from the seat cushion assembly (two seat back latch upper retaining bolts and one seat back to seat cushion pivot bolt).

9. Remove the seat trim cover.

10. Remove the recliner latch assembly.

11. Remove the seat back pad and lumbar support adjuster, if equipped.

12. Discard old seat frame.

REPAIR PROCEDURE - Installation

1. Install seat back latch to new seat frame.

2. Install seat back pad to new seat frame.

3. Install lumbar support adjuster (if equipped).

4. Position trimmed seat back assembly to seat cushion and re-install two (2) bolts required to retain the seat back latch to the new frame.

Tightening Torque: 22 - 32 ft.lbs. (30 - 43 N-m).

5. Install seat back frame to seat cushion frame pivot bolt. Tightening Torque: 14 - 19 ft.lbs. (19 - 26 N-m)

6. Install front seat center arm rest and link to seat assembly (if equipped). Tightening Torque: 20 - 32 ft.lbs. (27 - 43 N-m)

7. Install tip slide adjuster rod to seat.

8. Install inboard pivot cover to seat.

9. Install outboard side shield to seat.

10. Install complete seat assembly (including slide bar) in vehicle. Tightening Torque: 13 - 17 ft.lbs. (17 - 23 N-m)

11. Verify that the seat functions properly.

12. Verify repair.
