Subject
TORQUE CONVERTER VIBRATION/NOISE
DESCRIPTION
A vibration or resonance noise may occur while driving at 1600-1800 rpm with the torque converter locked up in 4th gear.
This vibration or resonance is the engine pulse magnified by the (imbalanced) torque converter.
New torque converters have been used in manufacturing vehicle transmissions since October 17, 1991.
Vehicles with this symptom that have VIN's lower than 4F2CU4*X*NUM03988 and transmissions built prior to October 17, 1991 (see Figure 1 to identify build date) should have a new torque converter installed after validation of this symptom.
VALIDATION & REPAIR PROCEDURES
1. Drive the vehicle at 1600-1800 rpm 4th gear with the torque converter locked up.
2. If vibration or resonance is present, unlock torque converter by tapping lightly on the brake pedal with left foot while maintaining speed with right foot on the accelerator.
3. If the vibration or resonance stops, the source of the problem is confirmed. Replace the torque converter as outlined in the Navajo Workshop Manual Section K-01 with the new torque converter (ZZL1 19 100).
4. If the vibration or resonance does not stop, inspect the vehicle using troubleshooting procedures in the Workshop Manual, Section K.
