Subject
ENGINE OIL LEAKS AROUND OIL PAN AREA
DESCRIPTION
This bulletin explains the inspection and repair procedures for oil leaks around the area of the oil pan.
INSPECTION PROCEDURE
When diagnosing engine oil leaks, it is important to locate the leak before beginning any repair procedures. The recommended diagnostic procedure requires the use of a Fluorescent Leak Detector Kit (figure 1).
NOTE:
The Fluorescent Leak Detector Kit can be ordered through Mazda's National Accounts Program. Contact your District Service Manager to fill out an equipment order form.
1. Clean the cylinder block, cylinder head(s), oil pan, and flywheel housing areas with a suitable solvent to remove all traces of oil.
2. Drain the engine oil.
3. Mix the Fluorescent Oil Additive with the replacement oil and pour it into the crankcase or pour the additive into the crankcase before adding the replacement oil. Use a minimum of 14.8 ml (1/2 fluid ounce) to a maximum of 29.6 ml (1 fluid ounce) of the fluorescent additive.
4. Run the engine for 15 minutes.
5. Stop the engine and inspect all seal and gasket areas for leaks using the ultraviolet light and the leak, detector kit. For extremely small leaks, it may take several hours for the leak to appear. To verify that the leaking fluid is oil, compare its color to that of the oil on the dipstick. Listed are possible oil leakage areas:
Underhood
^ Rocker cover gasket
^ Intake manifold gaskets
^ Cylinder head gaskets
^ Oil filter
^ Dipstick tube connection
^ Oil pressure sending unit
^ Plugs at ends of oil passages
Under Engine, With Vehicle on Hoist
^ Oil pan gasket
^ Crankshaft rear seal
^ Crankshaft front seal
^ Rear main bearing cap paning line
^ Flywheel mounting bolt holes
6. If a leak is found, proceed to the "Repair Procedures".
