Subject:
ACCESSORY DRIVE IDLER PULLEY SQUEAL DURING COLD START AND COLD AMBIENT TEMP.

APPLICABLE MODELS
1991 - 94 Navajo

DESCRIPTION

Some vehicles may have a squeal noise from the front of the engine during cold start-up after cold soak (below 0 degrees F, -18 C). The squeal may be coming from the accessory drive idler pulley. The noise may be caused by bearing instability at temperatures below the tolerance of the bearing grease used.

Customers complaining of this noise should have the accessory drive system inspected and if necessary, the pulley replaced.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Verify complaint at temperatures described above.

2. Check for noise at the idler pulley bearing using a mechanics stethoscope.

^ If the noise is present, proceed to step 3.

^ If the noise is not present in that area, inspect other areas of the vehicle which could generate the squeal noise.

3. Remove the accessory drive belt and start the engine.

^ If the noise is not present, proceed to step 4.

^ IF the noise is still present, the idler pulley is not the cause of the noise. Refer to the workshop manual for troubleshooting and repair information.

CAUTION:
Do Not allow the engine to run for more than 30 seconds without the drive belt installed. Potential engine damage could result.

4. Replace the idler pulley assembly. Refer to section B of the workshop manual for removal and installation instructions. Pulley bolt tightening torque: 30 ft-lbs. (40.7 Nm) minimum.

^ Verify that the new pulley maintains sufficient clearance to rotate freely.
