Seat Repair Procedures
1. Verify the condition.
2. Inspect the top and/or bottom plastic surfaces of the front seat belt buckle support "slide bar" assembly for damage (refer to Figure 1).
^ If the plastic sleeve is damaged, obtain a new "slide bar" assembly. Proceed to Step 1 below for rework.
NOTE:
Do not attempt to sand or file the plastic sleeve
If the "slide bar" sleeve shows no damage, check for "slide bar" lock-up.
^ Remove the Torx bolt retaining the "slide bar" to the floor. If the seat can be adjusted, obtain two (2) screw and washer assemblies, two (2) torque-prevailing nuts (listed in the Parts Information section) and perform the following repair procedure. If the seat still will not adjust, look for another reason for the seat being inoperable (e.g. a detached or broken assist spring) and repair as required.
NOTE:
Do not replace the "slide bar" or sleeve
REMOVAL
1. Refer to Figure 2, for the affected area of rework.
2. Remove the seat and track assembly from the vehicle:
Remove the plastic seat track covers. Remove the four (4) seat track-to-floor retaining screws (two on each side). Remove the Torx bolt behind the cover retaining the rear part of the "slide bar" assembly to the floor. Disconnect the electrical connector for the seat belt switch, drivers side only.
3. Lift the seat track assembly from the vehicle and place upside down on a clean, protected surface.
4. Remove the floor console (if equipped) ref. to Figure 3:
^ Remove the console armrest mounting covers, one each side.
^ Remove the four (4) bolts, armrest assembly -to- rear of the console.
^ Remove the screw at the rear of the console, console -to- rear mounting bracket.
^ Remove the drop-in utility tray from the console.
Remove the two (2) screws at the front of the console, console -to- front mounting bracket.
^ Lift and remove the console assembly.
5. Remove the seat belt buckle support assembly "slide bar" from the seat assembly (refer to Figure 4):
^ Remove bolt, "slide bar" collar -to- the tearshaped bracket mounted on the inboard side of the seat cushion.
^ Remove nut, "slide bar" assembly -to- mounting bracket attached to the front of the seat cushion.
6. Detach the seat track assist spring.
7. Remove two (2) screws, inboard seat track assembly -to- seat cushion.
8. Remove track assembly.
SEAT TRACK ASSEMBLY REWORK
1. Clamp the seat track assembly in vise (refer to Figure 5).
CAUTION:
USE CARE NOT TO DAMAGE THE SEAT TRACK CARRIAGE DURING PROCESS.
2. Scribe a vertical reference line at the front edge of the "slide bar" mounting bracket. At the lower edge scribe another reference line (refer to Figure 5).
NOTE:
The front edge of the bracket must be used for the vertical reference line. This will position the bracket properly when installed in step 9.
3. Using the scribed reference line as a guide:
^ Measure exactly 4.0 mm parallel to the base reference line and mark the track support in two (2) places Scribe a work line between both marks (refer to Figures 7 and 9).
4. Carefully grind both rivet heads off the bracket. Drive out the remaining portion of the rivets through the bracket and track support (refer to Figure 8).
NOTE:
To protect the support bracket drive the remaining portion of the rivets through the bracket, then through the track.
5. Align the bracket with the vertical and horizontal work lines and clamp in place (refer to Figure 6).
6. Using the holes in the relocated bracket as a guide, drill two (2) 1/4" (6.35 mm) holes through the support of the inboard track assembly. Remove the clamp and the bracket from the track support (refer to Figure 6).
7. Scribe two (2) vertical work lines connecting the top and bottom of each set of holes. Carefully file out the metal to form slots (refer to Figure 7).
8. Remove any burrs from the back of the slots.
9. Using two (2) retaining screws and two (2) torque-prevailing nuts, loosely install the bracket to the track support (refer to Figure 8).
NOTE:
First install the bolts through the bracket, then through the track support.
10. Tighten both retaining bolts and nuts enough to take up the slack between the bracket and the track support. The bracket must be able to move for adjustment as described in Step 11 of the "Installation Procedure".
11. Clamp the old "slide bar" assembly into the vise.
12. Remove the Torx bolt, seat belt buckle assy. -to- "slide bar" collar (refer to Figure 9).
NOTE:
Save the buckle assembly.
13. Clamp the new "slide bar" assembly into the vise (refer to Figure 10).
NOTE:
Clamp the collar of the "slide bar" assembly in a vise along the breakline only.
14. Align the slot in the anchor of the seat belt buckle with the anti-rotation tab of the "slide bar" collar. Install the buckle with the anti-rotation tab of the "slide bar" assembly. Torque the retaining bolt to 30-40 N-m (22-29 ft.lb.).
15. Lubricate the seat track assembly with Multi-purpose Grease Spray.
INSTALLATION
1. Position the new replacement "slide bar" assembly on the seat cushion/track assembly (refer to Figure 11).
NOTE:
The "slide bar" must be positioned over the stud on the mounting bracket attached to the seat track assembly.
2. Secure the bolt, slide bar collar -to- seat cushion bracket. Torque the bolt to 7-9, 5 N-m (5-7 ft.lb).
3. Loosely install the torque-prevailing nut, front end of the "slide bar" -to- support bracket located on the front of the seat track assembly.
^ Tighten the nut, but do not allow it to contact the plastic sleeve on the "slide bar"
NOTE:
The "slide bar" must be able to move easily forward and rearward prior to installation of the seat assembly in the vehicle.
4. Position the seat assembly in the vehicle, install the screws, seat tracks -to- floor:
^ Hand start the front and rear seat track-to-floor retaining screws.
^ For proper alignment, first torque the front attachments to 12-23 N-m (9-17 lb.ft). Torque the rear attachments to 19-26 N-m (14-19 lb.ft.), (14-19 ft.lb.).
5. Align the rear attaching hole in the "slide bar" assembly with the attaching hole in the floor. Be sure the rubber spacer is in place between the "slide bar" and the floor attachment.
6. Position the "slide bar" boot to the "slide bar" assembly. Install Torx bolt through the boot, "slide bar", rubber spacer, and into the weld nut provided in the floor (refer to Figure 12). Hand start the retaining bolt into the weld nut.
7. Rotate the "slide bar" against the head of the bolt. If the "slide bar" is not against the bolt head, it may be possible for the shoulder of the bolt to "bottom out" on the "slide bar". This will result in the "slide bar" not being aligned.
8. Torque Torx bolt to 30-40 N-m (22-29 ft.lb.)
9. Connect the electrical connector on the driver's seat for the seat belt signal. Move seat all the way forward.
10. Tighten the two (2) nuts, front "slide bar" which attaches the bracket -to- inboard seat track assembly (refer to Figure 13).
11. Slowly move the seat forward and rearward while checking for easy movement. If the seat does not move easily, perform the following steps:
^ Move the seat all the way forward.
^ Loosen the two (2) nuts and bolts, front "slide bar" bracket -to- inboard seat track assembly. The support bracket may require adjustment up or down to achieve proper alignment.
^ Tighten the nuts and bolts and re-check the seat movement. If the seat does move forward and rearward easily, torque the nuts and bolts to 7.5-10.5 N-m (6-8 ft.lb).
12. Using an open end wrench, tighten the nut, front of the "slide bar" -to- bracket mounted on the seat track. Refer to Figure 14.
13. After the nut has bottomed out on the "slide bar" loosen the nut one (1) full turn.
14. Reverse the removal steps and install the floor console. Be sure to torque the attachments shown in Figure 15.
15. Verify that the seat adjusts forward and rearward properly.
16. Check the passenger seat for proper operation and correct if needed.
17. Check the seat belt for proper operation.
