A vibration or "moan" may be audible during acceleration with the engine operating in the 2000-2400 rpm range. This problem only exists in models equipped with automatic transmissions.

An improved vibration damper has been used in production since December 21, 1990.

INSPECTION & REPAIR PROCEDURE

Confirm the following:

1. Verify that the noise is in the 2000-2400 rpm range when accelerating.

2. Verify that the damper mounted on the rear of the transfer case has a white stripe painted on the edge of the mounting plate. Figure 1.

NOTE:
This may require removal of the vibration damper because the stripe may be facing the transfer case.

3. Replace the existing transfer case vibration damper with a new damper (ZZL1 26 080). The replacement part is all black, the original part has a white stripe.

4. Attach the damper to the transfer case with new bolts (9XB0 13 80A). Tighten the bolts to 25-35 ft.lb. (34-47 N-m). If the new bolts are not available, coat the threads of the used bolts with Threadlock 262 (ZZL1 69 232).
