Flow Chart No. 1: Radio Inoperative




Visual Inspection Chart

Flow Chart No. 1 - Symptom - Radio inoperative - does not operate properly. Radio/tape player inoperative - does not operate properly. Tape player only inoperative - radio operates.

Step 1
Check operation of radio.




1. Turn ignition switch to RUN or ACC, then press radio POWER on.




2. Is radio display lit?

Step 2
Check quality sound coming from speakers.
1. Verify that quality sound is coming from speakers.




2. Is quality sound coming from speakers?

Step 3
Display test - AM band indicator.
1. Press AM/FM button for AM band.




2. Press TUNE or SCAN button to station 1000 AM.




3. Is display correct and AM indicator lit?

Step 4
Display test - FM1/FM2 band indicators.
1. Press AM/FM button for FM1 band.




2. Press TUNE or SCAN button to station 88.9 FM.
3. Verify for FM2 band.




4. Is display correct and FM1 and FM2 indicators lighting respectively?

Step 5
Display test - ST stereo indicator.




1. Press TUNE, SCAN or SEEK buttons to a local FM stereo station.




2. Is display correct and ST indicator lit?

Step 6
SEEK - Higher frequency station.

NOTE
^ If display reads 1610 AM or 107.9 FM, display will not increase. The SEEK (>) button should be pressed until display reads less than 1610 AM or 107.9 FM.




1. Press SEEK (>) and verify that number on display increases.




2. Is SEEK (>) operating properly?

Step7
SEEK - Lower frequency station.

NOTE
^ If display reads 530 AM or 88.1 FM, display will not decrease. The SEEK (>) button should be pressed until display reads greater than 530 AM or 88.1 FM.




1. Press SEEK (>) and verify that number on display decreases.




2. Is SEEK (>) operating properly?

Step 8
Station recall memory test,
1. Press SCAN, TUNE or SEEK buttons to a desired station.
2. Press and hold one of the memory buttons (1 through 6) for two seconds until station sound is returned. Repeat for all six stations.




3. Do the same for AM, FM1 and FM2 bands using eighteen stations.
4. Turn radio off, then on.
5. Press each station recall button and verify memory storage.




6. Is memory test successful?

Step 9
Volume control test.




1. Turn VOLUME knob to increase and decrease volume of sound from radio.




2. Does volume change properly?

Step 10
Tune control test.




1. Press TUNE button (>) or (<) to change the frequency station up or down one increment at a time. Change frequencies by holding the (>) or (<) side of button.
Verify for all bands.




2. Does TUNE operate properly?

Step 11
SCAN mode test.




1. Press SCAN button to enter scan mode.
2. Display will blink AM, FM1 or FM2 indicator and begin forward scan mode up to next radio station or a five-second sampling.
3. Stop scan mode by pressing SCAN or SEEK or TUNE button presently matching direction of scanning.




4. Does scan mode operate properly?

Step 12
Tune antenna test.
1. Tune radio on AM band outside of building.




2. Press SEEK to observe all listenable stations on band. Count number that can be tuned.
3. Compare to a vehicle with known good radio.




4. Is normal number of stations received?

Step 13
AUTO - Automatic memory store.




1. Press AUTO SET button for three seconds.
2. Verify that radio automatically presets six strong stations sequentially on memory recall buttons 1 through 6.
3. Turn off radio, then turn back on.
4. Verify the same six stations are in memory for buttons 1 through 6.




5. Does AUTO SET operate properly?

Step 14
Tone control test.




1. Bass: Press BASS rocker switch to increase low frequency sounds. Press bottom of rocker switch to decrease low frequency sounds.
2. Treble: Press treble (TREB) rocker switch to increase high frequency sounds. Press bottom of rocker switch to decrease high frequency sounds.



3. Do BASS and TREBLE operate properly?

Step 15
Balance control test.




1. Balance: Press BAL rocker switch top to increase sound level from right speakers. Press rocker switch bottom to increase sound level from left speakers.




2. Does balance operate properly?

FADER control test.




1. FADER: Press FADE rocker switch bottom to increase sound level from rear speakers. Press rocker switch top to increase sound level from front speakers.




2. Does FADE operate properly?

Tape player - Loading test.

NOTE
^ If tape is at the end, playing will start on reverse side of tape.




1. With radio POWER on and ignition switch in RUN or ACC position, insert known good cassette into tape player opening (with open edge of tape to the right). Verify automatic powerloading (tape player draws tape in and begins to play tape) for premium.
2. Display will indicate arrows for ESC and whirling sprocket for premium stereo systems.




3. Does loading of tape and display operate properly?

Step 18
Tape player - SEEK test.




1. With tape playing, press SEEK button (>) to go to the beginning of the next tape selection. Press SEEK (<) to tune tape back to beginning of previous tape selection.




2. Does SEEK operate properly?

Step 19
Tape player - SCAN mode test.




1. Press SCAN to enter scan mode (display will blink SC). SCAN begins forward tape scan for a five-second sampling of each selection.
2. Stop scan mode by pressing the scan button.




3. Does scan mode operate properly?

Tape Player - REW/FF test.




1. Press REW button to rewind tape. The radio will automatically begin playing until rewind is manually stopped by pressing TAPE button or tape is completely rewound.
2. Press FF button to fast forward tape. Again, radio will begin playing until fast forward is manually stopped by pressing TAPE button or tape reaches end.




3. Do REW and FF work properly?

Tape player- SIDE 1-2 button test.
1. Press SIDE 1-2 button to reverse tape to opposite side of tape.




2. Does SIDE 1-2 button operate properly?

Tape player - DOLBY test.
1. If not equipped with CD changer, select Dolby Noise Reduction (expressed by a symbol of two half-circles with round edges facing each other). Verify quality of sound.




2. If equipped with CD changer, press memory button 4 to select Dolby Noise Reduction. Verify sound. Press to turn off.




3. Does Dolby operate properly?

Tape player - EJECT test.

NOTE
^ Tapes can be ejected with or without power on or ignition switch power.




1. Press button to eject tape from opening. Radio will resume playing if power is on.




2. Does EJECT operate properly?

Tape player - Speaker control test.




1. Perform BASS, TREBLE, BALANCE and FADER tests respectively, operating the VOLUME (+) and (-) for all conditions.
2. Perform just VOLUME test in both conditions to verify loudness.




3. Do all speaker controls operate properly?

Check inoperative or intermittent.
1. Verify if condition is intermittent or inoperative.




2. Is condition intermittent?

Check fuse.
1. Turn ignition switch off.




2. Check Fuse 20 (7.5 A) in fuse panel.
3. Check Fuse 29 (10 A) in fuse junction panel.




4. Is fuse open?

Check for grounded power feed.




1. With ignition switch off, check Fuse 20 (7.5 A), Circuit (Y/B) at radio connector for a short to ground.
2. Check Fuse 29 (10 A), Circuit (LG/PU).




3. Is power feed grounded?

Check power feed.




1. Connect voltmeter between radio connector (Y/B) and known good ground.
2. Turn ignition switch to RUN or ACC.




3. Does voltmeter indicate 10 volts or more?

Check wiring continuity - fuse.
1. Remove Fuse 20 (10 A) temporarily.




2. Check continuity between Fuse 29 (10 A) and radio connector (Y/B).
3. Check continuity between Fuse 29 (10 A) and radio connector (LG/PU).




4. Does continuity exist?

Check wiring continuity - ACCY fuse.




1. Check continuity between Fuse 20 (7.5 A) and ignition switch circuit (Y/B).




2. Does continuity exist?

Check ignition switch power.
1. Connect voltmeter to ignition switch connector (Y/B).
2. Turn ignition switch to ON or ACC.




3. Does voltmeter indicate 10 volts or more?

Check speakers.
1. With radio operating, check if condition is present on all speakers.




2. Is condition present on all speakers?

Check antenna.




1. Check radio antenna, cable connections and wiring.




2. Is antenna system operating properly?

Check radio.
1. Substitute known good speaker to radio.
2. Verify if condition is in speakers or radio operation.




3. Is radio operating?
