Piston and Connecting Rod Disassembly and Assembly

Disassembly Note

1. Remove the top compression ring.

NOTE: Use a suitable ring expander to remove piston rings to prevent damage.

2. Remove the second compression ring.

3. Remove the first oil control ring.

4. Remove the oil control spacer ring.

5. Remove the second oil control ring.

6. Using a suitable piston pin tool (D81L-6135-A or equivalent) press the piston pin out of the piston connecting rod assembly.

NOTE:
^ Verify the piston pin tool fits squarely into the piston before pressing.
^ Take note of piston connecting rod assembly and mark the connecting rod and piston to ensure proper orientation during reassembly.

7. Remove the connecting rod from the piston.
8. Clean and inspect the connecting rod and the piston; refer to Connecting Rod Inspection or Piston Inspection.
Testing and Inspection

Assembly Note

1. Lubricate the piston pin and piston pin bore.
- Use SAE 30 engine oil.

2. Using a suitable piston pin tool (D81L-6135-A or equivalent) press the piston pin into the piston and the connecting rod.

NOTE: During assembly the small end of the connecting rod must be heated to 232° - 316° C (450° - 600° F).

3. Install the second oil control ring.

NOTE: Lubricate the piston and the piston rings with SAE engine oil 5W-30.

NOTE: Use a suitable ring expander to install the piston rings, ensure ring end gaps are equally spaced around the circumference of the piston for all piston rings.

4. Install the oil control spacer ring.

5. Install the first oil control ring.

6. Install the second compression ring.

7. Install the top compression ring.
8. Check piston ring end gap and ring-to-groove side clearance; refer to Piston Inspection.
