Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators: Description and Operation
Operation
Key Warning
The warning chime sounds when the driver's door is open and the key is in the ignition switch. The chime sounds until the door is closed or the key is removed. When the driver's door is open, power is supplied to the GEM/CTM. When the key is in the ignition switch, ground is supplied to the GEM/CTM.
Oil Pressure Switch
With normal oil pressure, the switch is closed and the gauge indicates a reading in the NORMAL range. With low oil pressure, the switch opens and the gauge indicates a LOW reading.
Safety Belt Warning
When the ignition switch is turned to ON or START, power is supplied to the GEM/CTM, which then supplies power to illuminate the fasten belts indicator for six seconds, whether or not the driver's safety belt is fastened. If the driver's safety belt is not fastened during this time, the safety belt buckle switch remains closed, supplying ground to the GEM/CTM and causing it to sound for six seconds.
Headlights-On Warning
The warning chime sounds when the main headlights switch is in PARK or HEAD and the driver's door is open and continues to sound until the switch is moved to OFF or the door is closed.
When the main headlight switch is in PARK or HEAD, power is supplied to the GEM/CTM, ground is supplied to the GEM/CTM.
When the driver's door is open, the driver's door courtesy light switch is closed and power is supplied to the GEM/CTM.
Electronic Shift Control (GEM only)
The GEM controls the operation of the transfer case in response to rotary switch inputs. The 4x4 and 4x4 LOW cluster lights will illuminate when a signal is received from the GEM indicating the current transfer case position.
Lever-operated Shift Control
When the four-wheel drive is engaged, the switch closes a first contact and the 4x4 light illuminates. When the low range is engaged, the switch closes a second contact and the low range bulb illuminates at the same time as the 4x4 light illuminates.
Brake Warning Light
The brake indicator lights either when the brake fluid level switch closes (low fluid level) or when the park brake switch closes. The indicator also lights with the igniting switch in START to test the bulb.
Fuel Reset Light
The fuel reset lamp is grounded through the inertia shut-off switch whenever the vehicle is subjected to a high force situation. The inertia switch cuts off the fuel pump motor causing a loss of fuel to the cylinders.
