Pinpoint Test 4

Flow Chart No. 4 - Symptom - Charge indicator reads inaccurately.

Step 1
Verity voltage gauge operation.
1. Key on (engine off).
2. Headlamps on.
3. Heater blower/fan on highest setting.

4. Does gauge pointer move toward the lower portion of the normal band (white marked area)?

Step 2
Verify power at fuse panel - load side.

1. Using voltmeter, verify system voltage at load side of warning indicator Fuse 11 (7.5 A).

2. Is system voltage present at load side of fuse?

Step 3
Verify power at fuse panel - feed side.
1. Using voltmeter, verify system voltage at feed side of warning indicator Fuse 11 (7.5 A).

2. Is system voltage present at feed side of fuse?

Step 4
Verify power at instrument cluster.

1. Partially remove instrument cluster from instrument panel. Using voltmeter, verify system voltage at Pin 4 of the 16-pin cluster connector R/Y wire and gauge terminal.

2. Is voltage present at instrument cluster connector and gauge terminal?

Step 5
Verify ground circuitry at instrument cluster.

CAUTION
^ Before checking the continuity of any circuit, make sure there is no voltage present in the circuit prior to switching the test equipment to the resistance function to avoid damage to equipment. Refer to test equipment user's manual for additional information.

1. Using ohmmeter, check continuity of Pin 11 of the 12 - cluster connector B/W wire and gauge ground circuitry.

2. Is ground circuitry good?

Step 6
Check instrument cluster printed circuit continuity.

CAUTION
^ Before checking the continuity of any circuit, make sure there is no voltage present in the circuit prior to switching the test equipment to the resistance function to avoid damage to equipment. Refer to test equipment user's manual for additional information.

1. Check for instrument cluster printed circuit continuity and confirm flex circuit-to-clip and clip-to-gauge contact by physically flexing the wiring and observing continuity. Continuity reading should not fluctuate.

2. Are wiring and instrument cluster printed circuit OK?
