Camshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation

CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (CMP)
Detects position of camshaft and sends signal to PCM.

Operation
PCM uses for synchronizing firing of sequential fuel injectors.

NOTE:
- Uses a Variable Reluctance type sensor. CMP identifies when #1 piston is at top dead center of its compression stroke.
- If the camshaft position sensor or circuit has an open or short, Diagnostic Trouble Code No. P0340 is output.
- If the camshaft position sensor circuit fails, the engine may stall and not restart.
