Rear
Install in the order shown in the illustration, referring to the following notes:
Differential Gear Assembly (2)
1. Install a 6.73 mm (0.265 inch) shim on the left side.
2. Install the left bearing cap and finger tighten the bolts.
3. Install progressively larger shims on the right side until the largest shim selected can be assembled with a slight drag.
NOTE: Apply pressure toward the left side to ensure the bearing cup is seated.
4. Install the right side bearing cap and tighten to 95 - 115 Nm (70 - 85 ft. lbs.).
5. Rotate the differential gear assembly to ensure free rotation.
6. Check the ring gear and pinion backlash.
^ Preferred Backlash: 0.30 - 0.38 mm (0.012 - 0.015 inch).
^ Standard Backlash: 0.20 - 0.38 mm (0.008 - 0.015 inch).
7. If the backlash is within specification, proceed to step 17.
8. If the backlash is not within specification, proceed to step 13.
9. If the backlash is zero, proceed with step 11.
10. If the backlash is zero, add 0.5 mm (0.020 inch) to the right side and subtract 0.5 mm (0.020 inch) from the left side to allow a backlash condition.
11. Recheck the backlash.
12. If the backlash is not to specification, correct the backlash by increasing the thickness of one shim and decreasing the thickness on the other shim the same amount. Refer to the chart illustrated for approximate shim change.
13. Install the shims by driving them into position with SST. Install the bearing caps and tighten to 95 - 115 Nm (70 - 85 ft. lbs.).
14. Rotate the differential gear assembly several times.
15. Recheck the backlash. If the backlash is within specification, go to step 17. If backlash is not within specification, repeat step 13.
^ Preferred Backlash: 0.30 - 0.38 mm (0.012 - 0.015 inch).
^ Standard Backlash: 0.20 - 0.38 mm (0.008 - 0.015 inch).
16. Remove the bearing caps and bolts. To establish side bearing preload. increase both left and right shim sizes by 0.152 mm (0.006 inch). Make sure shims are fully seated and the differential gear assembly turns freely.
17. Install the bearing caps and tighten to 95 - 115 Nm (70 - 85 ft. lbs.).
18. Utilize white marking compound to obtain a tooth mesh contact pattern in the assembly.
19. The oil level should be below the oil supply port by 6.35 - 14.28 mm (0.25 - 0.56 inch) in the running position.
20. Install the oil supply port plug and tighten to 21 - 41 Nm (15 - 30 ft. lbs.).
Differential Cover (7)
1. Install the metal differential covers as follows:
a. Clean the old sealant from the differential cover and axle casing.
b. Apply a bead of sealant 3.18 - 4.76 mm (0.125 - 0.1875 inch) wide to the differential cover as shown in the illustration.
c. Install the differential cover within 15 minutes of applying sealant and tighten bolts to 34 - 47 Nm (25 - 35 ft. lbs.).
2. Install the plastic differential covers as follows:
a. Clean the old sealant from the axle casing.
b. Install a new differential cover and bolts. Tighten to 21 - 27 Nm (15 - 20 ft. lbs.).
