Last Issued: 03/19/2008

Subject:
BLUE SMOKE ON START UP

APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINs
2004-2007 B-Series vehicles with 3.0L engine

DESCRIPTION

Some 2004-2007 B-Series vehicles equipped with a 3.0L engine may exhibit blue smoke on start up after approximately a 4 hour cold soak. This may be due to small amounts of oil collecting in the upper intake manifold PCV channel. Under certain parking conditions, this oil can be drawn into the combustion chamber on start up, creating some blue smoke.

Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following repair procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Verify customer concern.

2. Remove the clamp on the PCV tube assembly at the PCV valve.

3. Remove the upper intake manifold. Refer to MS3 online instructions or Workshop Manual section 01-13B INTAKE MANIFOLD UPPER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION, but leave the PCV tube assembly attached to the upper intake manifold.

4. Remove the clamp on the PCV tube assembly at the upper intake manifold PCV port, then remove the PCV tube assembly from the upper intake manifold PCV channel.

5. Drain the residual oil from the upper intake manifold PCV channel by holding the PCV channel vertical with the port facing down.

6. While holding the upper intake manifold in the vertical position, spray Brake Cleaner into the PCV channel.

7. Dry the PCV channel with regulated compressed air.

8. Lubricate the o-ring at the end of the PCV tube assembly with water or a diluted soap/water solution.

9. Install the new PCV tube assembly into the clean upper intake manifold PCV channel.

10. Install the upper intake manifold. Refer to MS3 online instructions or Workshop Manual section 01-13B INTAKE MANIFOLD UPPER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.

11. Verify repair.
