Spare Key Programming - Using Diagnostic Equipment

SPARE KEY PROGRAMMING - USING DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT

NOTE:
- This procedure is used when a customer needs to have an additional key programmed into the vehicle without erasing stored key codes, but does not have 2 programmed keys available. This procedure is also useful when attempting to determine if an ignition key is defective, as a new key can be installed without erasing keys or without having 2 programmed keys available.
- Before programming, the new key must have the correct mechanical cut for the ignition lock cylinder.
- If 8 keys are already programmed, this procedure does not allow any more passive anti-theft system (PATS) keys to be programmed without erasing all stored key codes first. The number of keys that are programmed into the PATS can be determined by viewing the instrument cluster PID N_KEYCODE.

1. Turn the key from the OFF position to the ON position using the new, unprogrammed PATS key.
2. Select instrument cluster from the IDS or equivalent tester menu. Follow the anti-theft security access procedure to obtain security access. See ANTI-THEFT SECURITY ACCESS. Procedures

NOTE: Make sure the selection made is "PROGRAM". If "ERASE" selection is made, all of the keys will be erased from the system, and the vehicle will not start until a minimum of 2 keys are programmed into the instrument cluster.

3. From the IDS or equivalent tester menu select: IGNITION KEY CODE PROGRAM.
4. Turn the key to the OFF position and disconnect the IDS or equivalent tester.
5. Start the vehicle with the new PATS key. The vehicle will now start with the new PATS key and also with the original PATS keys.
