HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT (HCU)Removal and Installation
Warning:
^ Use of any other than approved DOT 3 brake fluid will cause permanent damage to brake components and will render the brakes inoperative. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
Warning:
^ Brake fluid contains polyglycol ethers and polyglycols. Avoid contact with eyes. Wash hands thoroughly after handling. If brake fluid contacts eyes, flush eyes with running water for 15 minutes. Get medical attention if irritation persists. If taken internally, drink water and induce vomiting. Get medical attention immediately. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
Caution:
^ Brake fluid is harmful to painted and plastic surfaces. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash it with water.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Disconnect the anti-lock brake system (ABS) module electrical connector by rotating the release lever.
Note:
^ After disconnecting the brake tube fittings, cap the holes in the hydraulic control unit (HCU) to prevent contamination or foreign material from entering the brake tube ports.
3. Disconnect the 5 brake tube fittings from the HCU.
^ To install, tighten to 17 N-m (1.7 kgf-m, 13 ft-lbf).
4. Remove the 2 HCU-to-bracket nuts and the HCU assembly.
^ To install, tighten to 5 N-m (44 lb-in).
Note:
^ If a new HCU is going to be installed, remove the ABS module.
5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
^ Bleed the brake system.
