Steering Column - Automatic Transmission

STEERING COLUMN - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

Disassembly

All vehicles
1. Remove the steering column.





2. Remove the ignition switch.
1. Remove the 2 screws.
2. Remove the ignition switch.
3. Remove the clockspring.





Caution:
^ Carefully note the position of the steering column lock gear, bearing and retainer prior to removal.


4. Remove the snap ring.





5. Remove the steering column lock housing bearing.





6. Remove the steering column lock gear.
7. Remove the gearshift lever pin and the gearshift lever.

Vehicles with tilt column





8. Remove the sensor ring.
1. Remove the steering column lower bearing spring.
2. Remove the sensor ring.

Vehicles with fixed column





9. Remove the snap ring from the bottom of the steering column shaft.

All vehicles





10. Remove the steering column bearing tolerance ring from the steering column shaft.





11. Remove the 2 lock cylinder housing pivot screws.

Vehicles with fixed columns





12. Remove the 2 lock cylinder housing screws and the steering column spacer.

All vehicles





Warning:
^ The steering column position spring is under tension and can come out with great force. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.


13. Remove the steering column lock cylinder housing and the steering column shaft from the steering actuator housing.
1. Pry up on the steering column locking levers using a shop fabricated tool.
2. On tilt steering columns, remove the steering column position spring.





14. Using a flat-blade screwdriver, pry up on the flush surface of the turn indicator cancel cam and remove.





15. Remove the snap ring.





16. Remove the steering column upper bearing spring.





17. Remove the steering column bearing sleeve.





18. Remove the steering column bearing tolerance ring.
1. Slide the steering column shaft in toward the steering column lock cylinder housing.
2. Slide the steering column bearing tolerance ring from the steering column shaft and remove the shaft.





19. Using a punch, remove the steering column upper bearing from the steering column lock cylinder housing.

Vehicles with tilt column





20. Use a punch to remove the steering column lower bearing from the steering column lock cylinder housing.

All vehicles





Caution:
^ If installing a new transaxle shift selector position insert, make sure that the correct part is being installed.


21. Remove the brake shift interlock solenoid and the transaxle shift position insert.
1. Remove the 3 bolts.
2. Remove the brake shift interlock solenoid and the transaxle shift position insert.





22. Remove the shift tube.
1. Remove the 4 bolts.
2. Remove the 2 shift tube clamps.
3. Remove the shift tube.





23. Remove the transaxle shift arm assembly.
1. Remove the 2 bolts.
2. Remove the transaxle shift arm assembly.





24. Remove the spring.





25. Drive out the gearshift lever pin from the shift tube.





26. Remove the gearshift lever.





27. Remove the column shift selector lever plunger.
^ If it is bent, replace the column shift selector lever plunger.





28. Remove the 2 gearshift lever socket bushings and the transaxle control selector lever spring clip.





29. Remove the steering column lock pawl.
1. Drive out the steering column lock lever pin.
2. Remove the steering column lock pawl.





30. Remove the steering column lower bearing and sleeve.





31. Remove the steering column lower bearing retainer.
1. Remove the bolts.
2. Remove the steering column lower bearing retainer.





32. Remove the steering column upper and lower lock actuators.

Assembly

All vehicles





Note:
^ Use premium long-life grease to lubricate the steering column lock actuators.

1. Install the steering column lock actuators.
1. Install the steering column upper lock actuator.
2. Install the steering column lower lock actuator.





Note:
^ Coat all surfaces with premium long-life grease.

2. Install the steering column lock pawl.
1. Position the steering column lock pawl.
2. Drive in the steering column lock lever pin.





3. Install the steering column lower bearing retainer.
1. Position the steering column lower bearing retainer.
2. Install the 2 bolts and tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).





Note:
^ The UP position of the bearing must be facing forward, toward the engine.

Note:
^ Install the steering column lower bearing and sleeve so that the inner race is visible when installed.

4. Install the steering column lower bearing and sleeve.








5. Install the transaxle control selector lever spring clip and the gearshift lever socket bushings on the shift tube.
^ Coat the gearshift lever socket bushings with premium long-life grease.





6. Install the column shift selector lever plunger.
^ Coat the column shift selector plunger with premium long-life grease.





7. Position the gearshift lever in the shift tube.





Caution:
^ Gearshift lever pin must be installed correctly or 1st gear position may be blocked.


8. Install the gearshift lever pin in the shift tube.





9. Install the gearshift selector tube spring in the shift tube.
^ Coat the end of the spring with premium long-life grease.





10. Install the transaxle selector lever arm and support on the shift tube.
1. Position the transaxle selector lever arm and support.
2. Install the 2 bolts and tighten to 15 Nm (12 lb-ft).





11. Install the shift tube.
1. Position the shift tube.
2. Position the 2 shift tube clamps.
3. Install the 4 bolts and tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).





Caution:
^ If installing a new transaxle shift selector position insert, make sure that the correct part is being installed.


12. Install the brake shift interlock solenoid.
1. Position the brake shift interlock solenoid.
2. Install the 3 bolts and tighten to 9 N-m (0.9 kgf-m, 80 in-lbf).





Caution:
^ Install the upper steering column bearing so that the inner race is visible when installed.


13. Using an appropriate bearing installer or socket, install the steering column upper bearing on the steering column lock cylinder housing.








Vehicles with tilt column





Caution:
^ Install the large steering column bearing so that the inner race is visible when installed.


Note:
^ Use an appropriate bearing installer or socket.

14. Install the steering column lower bearing into the steering column lock cylinder housing.








All vehicles





15. Position the steering column shaft in the steering column lock cylinder housing.
^ Install the steering column bearing tolerance ring on the steering column shaft.





16. Install the steering column bearing sleeve.





17. Install the steering column upper bearing spring.





18. Install the snap ring.





Note:
^ Lubricate the lock cylinder housing bushings with premium long-life grease.

19. Install the turn indicator cancel cam.





20. Install the lock cylinder housing screws loosely and position the steering actuator housing in a vise.
^ Lubricate the lock cylinder housing screws with premium long-life grease.
^ Make sure the upper and lower steering column lock actuators are aligned.





21. Position the steering column lock cylinder housing and the steering column shaft in the steering actuator housing.





22. Position the steering column locking levers on the steering actuator housing.
1. Use a shop fabricated tool.
2. Install and compress the steering column position spring.





23. Position the lock cylinder housing and steering actuator housing. Install the 2 screws and tighten to 22 N-m (2.2 kgf-m, 16 ft-lbf).

Vehicles with tilt column





24. Position the lock cylinder housing and steering actuator housing.
^ Tighten the lock cylinder housing screws to 22 N-m (2.2 kgf-m, 16 ft-lbf).

Vehicles with fixed column





25. Position the steering column spacer and install the 2 lock cylinder housing screws.
^ To install, tighten to 22 N-m (2.2 kgf-m, 16 ft-lbf).

Vehicles with tilt column





26. Install the sensor ring.
1. Install the sensor ring.
2. Install the steering column lower bearing spring.

Vehicles with fixed column





27. Install the steering column bearing tolerance ring.

All vehicles





28. Install ignition switch.
1. Align the ignition switch with the slot and index mark on the steering column.
2. Install the 2 screws and tighten to 6 N-m (0.6 kgf-m, 53 in-lbf).





Note:
^ The narrow section of the keyhole in the lock gear must be in the 1 o'clock position.

29. Install the steering column lock gear.
^ Use premium long-life grease to coat the steering column lock gear.





30. Install the steering column lock housing bearing.
^ The narrow section of the keyhole should be in the 1 o'clock position, with the tab inboard at the 3 o'clock position and rotate it counterclockwise.
^ Lubricate the steering column lock housing bearing with premium long-life grease.





31. Install the bearing retainer firmly to engage the 4 retention tabs into the lock housing.
32. Install the gearshift lever and the gearshift lever pin.
33. Install the multi-function switch and 2 screws.
^ Tighten to 3 N-m (0.3 kgf-m, 27 in-lbf).
34. Install the clockspring.
35. Install the steering column.
