Differential Case and Ring Gear Rear (Standard) Disassembly / Assembly
DIFFERENTIAL CASE AND RING GEAR REAR (STANDARD) DISASSEMBLY / ASSEMBLYDisassembly Note
1. Remove the differential case.
2. Remove the 10 ring gear bolts.
Caution:
- Care should be taken not to damage the ring bolt hole threads.
3. Insert a punch in the bolt holes and drive the ring gear off.
Note:
- The anti-lock speed sensor ring cannot be reused once removed.
4. Remove the speed sensor ring if required.
5. Using a 2-Jaw Puller ST 205-D072 and Bearing Remover ST 205-D016, remove the differential bearing.
- Repeat for the other side.
6. Remove and discard the differential pinion shaft lock bolt and remove the differential pinion shaft.
7. Remove the differential pinion shaft.
8. Rotate and remove the differential pinion gears and differential pinion thrust washers.
Note:
- Mark one of the side gears so they can be installed back on the correct sides.
9. Remove the differential side gears and the differential pinion thrust washers.
Assembly Note
Note:
- Make sure the thrust washers are at least 0.762 mm (0.030 in) thick but less than 0.813 mm (0.32 in) thick.
1. Use rear axle lubricant meeting specification API-GL5 to lubricate the differential side gear thrust washers and the differential side gear journals.
(1) Position the differential side gear thrust washers on the differential side gears.
2. Position the differential side gears.
3. Use rear axle lubricant to lubricate the differential pinion thrust washers and the differential pinion gears and assemble.
4. Engage the differential pinion gears opposite the differential side gears.
5. Rotate the differential pinion gears to align with the differential pinion shaft bore.
6. Insert the differential pinion shaft.
(1) Align the hole in the differential pinion shaft with the hole in the differential case.
Note:
- If a new pinion shaft lock bolt is unavailable, coat the threads with Loctite or equivalent prior to installation.
7. Install a new differential pinion shaft lock bolt and tighten finger-tight.
8. Use Differential Side Bearing Replacer ST 49 UNO1 074 to install the new differential bearings on the differential case.
Caution:
- Make sure that the notches on the case flange and the anti-lock speed sensor ring are aligned.
9. If removed, press the new anti-lock speed sensor ring and the ring gear on the differential case.
10. Install the ring gear bolts in the order indicated.
(1) Apply thread lock sealant to the ring gear bolts.
11. Install the differential case.
