Removal and Replacement

ENGINE REMOVAL / INSTALLATION - 2.3L
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. See Lifting.
2. Relieve the fuel pressure. See Service and Repair.
3. Disconnect the battery. See Procedures.
4. Recover the A/C system. See A/C Refrigerant System Tests.
5. Drain the engine cooling system. See - Removal and Replacement.
6. Drain the engine oil.
7. Remove the hood.
1. Remove the accelerator control splash shield.
2. Remove the air cleaner tube. See - Service and Repair.
1. Remove the upper radiator hose.
1. Remove the lower radiator hose.
2. Remove the fan and shroud. See - Electric Cooling Fan Removal / Installation.
1. Disconnect the powertrain control module (PCM) electrical connectors. Remove the retaining nut on the harness clamp. Position the harness on the engine.Tightening Torque:4 Nm {35 ft-lbi}
1. Remove the ground stud for the PCM.Tightening Torque:10 Nm {89 ft-lbi}
1. Remove the heater hose assembly.
a. Disconnect the heater water hoses at the bulkhead.
b. Disconnect the vacuum hose.
c. Disconnect the heater water hoses at the engine and remove the assembly.
1. Disconnect the vacuum hose to the vacuum reservoir.
1. Disconnect the engine-to-degas bottle bypass hose.
1. Disconnect the degas bottle-to-engine supply hose.
1. Disconnect the A/C compressor clutch.
1. Disconnect the mass airflow sensor (MAF) electrical connector.
1. Disconnect the A/C compressor manifold, plug the lines and the compressor ports.
1. Position the accelerator and cruise control cables aside.
a. Disconnect the accelerator cable and cruise control cable (if equipped) from the throttle linkage.
b. Disconnect the accelerator cable and cruise control cable (if equipped) from the mounting bracket and position out of the way.
1. Disconnect and position aside the following:
a. The power steering pressure (PSP) switch electrical connector.
b. The high pressure power steering hose.
2. Disconnect the fuel supply tube. See, - Service and Repair.
1. Disconnect the electrical connectors and evaporative purge hose.
1. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose and the engine ground strap.Tightening Torque:10 Nm {89 ft-lbi}
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the positive battery cable. Disconnect the solenoid control wire at the starter.
1. Remove the starter wiring harness clamp bolt and position it out of the way.Tightening Torque:24 Nm {18 ft-lbf}
1. Position the RH splash shield out of the way.
1. Disconnect the alternator electrical connections.
1. Detach alternator wiring pin-type retainer.
1. Disconnect the block heater electrical connector, if equipped.
1. Disconnect the front heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector at the bell housing.
1. If the vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, remove the bolt retaining the transmission cooling tubes to the engine and remove the bracket.
1. Remove the transmission dust shield.
1. Remove the exhaust manifold-to-front pipe nuts.
1. Disconnect the engine wiring harness anchor and the pin-type retainer, then position the wiring harness aside.
1. Disconnect the oil pressure sensor electrical connector.
1. Remove the engine oil filter.
1. Disconnect the wiring harness from the crossmember and disconnect the electrical connector. Route the wiring harness to the transmission
1. If equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector.
1. If equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect the catalyst monitor sensor electrical connector. Remove the nut and route the wiring harness over the transmission.Tightening Torque:10 Nm {89ft-lbi}
1. If equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect the transmission electrical connectors and detach the wiring harness retainers.
1. If equipped with automatic transmission, detach the wiring harness retainers.
1. If equipped with manual transmission, disconnect the HO2S electrical connector.
1. If equipped with manual transmission, disconnect the catalyst monitor sensor electrical connector. Remove the nut and route the wiring harness over the transmission.Tightening Torque:10 Nm {89ft-lbi}
1. If equipped with manual transmission, disconnect the transmission electrical connectors and detach the wiring harness retainers.
2. Route the transmission portion of the wiring harness to the transmission.
1. Remove the oil filter adapter.
2. Remove the starter motor. See - Service and Repair.
1. Remove the starter dust shield.

NOTE:Mark one stud and the flexplate for assembly reference.If equipped with automatic transmission, remove the four torque converter nuts.

NOTE:Leave two side bolts in until the engine is ready to be removed.Remove nine of the transmission-to-engine bolts.
1. On vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, remove the transmission fluid indicator and tube assembly.
1. Install the engine lifting eyes SST (303-D050) or equivalent.
2. Support the transmission with a floor jack.
1. Support the engine with the floor crane using the spreader bar.
2. Remove the two side transmission-to-engine bolts.

NOTE:Left side shown, right side similar.Remove the four engine support insulator nuts.
2. Remove the engine from the vehicle.
3. On vehicles equipped with a manual transmissions, remove the clutch. See Service and Repair.
4. Remove the flywheel or flexplate. See - Service and Repair.
5. Mount the engine on a suitable work stand.
6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
