Flywheel/Flexplate Removal / Installation

FLYWHEEL/FLEXPLATE REMOVAL / INSTALLATION - 2.3L

Removal Note

1. Remove the transmission. See Automatic Transmission Removal / Installation or Manual Transmission Removal / Installation (manual transmission).

2. Remove the clutch, if equipped. See Service and Repair.






1. Install the flywheel locking tool SST and remove the bolts and the flywheel or flexplate.

Installation Note

NOTE:Engine balancing is not required. Balance weights should not be installed on the new flywheel.
NOTE:Special bolts are used for installation. Do not use standard bolts.
1. Inspect the pilot bearing (manual transmission only). Install a new pilot bearing as necessary.

2. Install the flywheel or flexplate.

3. Install the flywheel locking tool SST.






1. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown in three stages.

- Stage 1: Tighten to 50 N-m {5.1 kgf-m, 37 ft-lbf}.
- Stage 2: Tighten to 80 N-m {8.16 kgf-m, 59 ft-lbf}.
- Stage 3: Tighten to 112 N-m {11.42 kgf-m, 83 ft-lbf}.

2. Install the clutch, if equipped. See Service and Repair.

3. Install the transmission. See Automatic Transmission Removal / Installation or Manual Transmission Removal / Installation (manual transmission).
